It was a battle of wills on Thursday evening as the Saratoga Panthers hosted their Valley and conference rivals, the Encampment Tigers (20-1, 7-1). • In government we trust?

    Saratoga Sun Editorial|Feb 20, 2019

How much do you trust the government to police itself? This last election cycle, transparency was a big talking point for everyone from the gubernatorial candidates down to municipal positions. Upon being elected, Governor Mark Gordon even organized a transparency committee to find ways that the State of Wyoming could be more open and available to constituents and taxpayers. When the 65th Wyoming Legislature convened, however, three bills aimed at limiting transparency were introduced. These bills, in one way or another, attempted to limit...

  • Schnieder to Shrine

    Mike Armstrong|Feb 20, 2019

The beginning of the Panther football season had the team switch from a 1A team to 6 man. There were not enough numbers to field a team larger than 6 man, but, due to the population of Saratoga High School and Encampment High School from which the team drew its players last year, the team is considered 1A. This also meant whatever games played as 6 man would not count. This means no recognition from the conferences or state for the Panther players. Any player participating on the Panther team wa...

For their final home game of the season, the Saratoga Lady Panthers secured their first conference win of the season as they hosted the Encampment Lady Tigers (7-14. 1-7) on Thursday. Mike Armstrong|Feb 20, 2019

The entire Saratoga High School wrestling team is going to state after having all individuals earn at least a top eight finish at regionals on Feb. 15-16 in Wright. “As a group, this is the best we have wrestled since before Christmas,” Head coach Zach Schmidt said. “We have had a lot of ups and downs since Christmas break with injuries, some move outs and attrition so our team did a great job coming together for regionals.” At regionals only two teams fielded less wrestlers than the...

  • Roaming the Romios

    Joshua Wood|Feb 20, 2019

"Before today, I never would have thought Josh Wood would go snowshoeing." This statement, from Karen Buford while snowshoeing, isn't far from the truth. When I woke up on the morning of Feb. 17 to cover the Upper Valley Search and Rescue Ben Romios Poker Run, I had no idea I would find myself strapped into a pair of snowshoes. Shortly after arriving at the gates that mark the closure of Wyoming Highway 70 for the season, however, Margaret Weber talked me into giving it a try. I informed...

PacifiCorp, a regulated utility who serves 1.9 million customers in six western states, has applied for approval to repower the existing Foote Creek Rim 1 Wind Project located near Arlington, Wyo. Repowering will primarily involve removing the existing 68 turbines and replacing them with 12 new turbines. Although the activities involved are typical for wind energy project maintenance, residents may notice increased vehicle traffic during the construction period. The project is expected to bring more than $14 million dollars in added tax...

Wildlife managers want to better define and understand the migration risks for big game animals in the Platte Valley. “We hope to gather input from the public on the potential challenges facing migrating ungulates and look at ways we can mitigate these challenges,” said Embere Hall, wildlife management coordinator for the Game and Fish Department’s Laramie Region. For...

    Joshua Wood|Feb 20, 2019

Minimum standards and ground hangar leases were, again, a central topic of discussion during the regularly scheduled meeting of the Saratoga Airport Board at 1 p.m. on Feb. 13 at Saratoga Town Hall. Despite the assurance in January that Tom Thompson, who was recently appointed as the town attorney, would be in attendance at the February meeting of the airport board, Thompson was not present. As was reported previously, (see “New year takes off” on page 2 of the Jan. 16 Saratoga Sun), town cl...
