Dads and daughters cut the rug

Hanna Recreation Center holds second annual near-Valentines father/daughter dance and dinner, gets good turnout from surrounding areas

"This is our second Daddy/Daughter dance which is sort of a combination Valentine dance and Sweetheart dance for fathers and their daughters," Hanna Recreation Center director Vivian Gonzales said on Saturday.

The dance proved popular last year when the Hanna Recreation Center introduced it and Gonzales wanted to see if she could start a tradition.

"We do this purposely right after Valentines Day because there is already a sense of exchanging gifts between loved ones," Gonzales said. "And there is a special bond between fathers and daughters that this dance gets to show."

She said many of the fathers and daughters came dressed up and this year the recreation center had single roses and corsages for the attendees. The dance also included a spaghetti dinner, desserts and beverages.

"I think everyone likes the idea of getting dressed up," Gonzales said. "Both fathers and daughters."

Gonzales was happy to see many attendees from outside the town. She said some came from outlying ranches and other nearby municipalities.

"There are a lot of people here I don't know offhand," Gonzales said. "That is a good thing because it means the father/daughter dance is getting a good reputation not only in our town, but from nearby areas."

The success of this year ensures there will be another father/daughter dance next year.
