  • A more thoughtful manner

    Joshua Wood|May 5, 2021

When the 66th Wyoming Legislature gathered in Cheyenne, they arrived with a heavy task on their shoulders. Following the economic impacts of the coronavirus (COVID-19), a number of budget cuts were on the table including education funding. The State of Wyoming is obligated, through the state constitution, to fund education. In the interim sessions, the School Recalibration Committee had made their recommendations on how to make those cuts while still fulfilling the legislature’s c...

  • Nyman nominated

    Joshua Wood|May 5, 2021

Just one day after Paul Zamora's effective retirement as the Carbon County Coroner, the Carbon County Republican Party Central Committee unanimously selected a candidate to fill the vacancy. Brittany Nyman, who served as chief deputy coroner under Zamora, will be presented to the Board of Carbon County Commissioners (BOCCC) during their May 4 meeting in Rawlins. As was previously reported (see "No finer professional" on page 1 of the April 28 Saratoga Sun), Zamora's retirement was announced via...

  • More than a water stop

    Joshua Wood|May 5, 2021

When driving along U.S. 30, the town of Medicine Bow can be a welcome sight to those traveling to Carbon, Natrona or Albany County. The town of less than 300 people nearly seems an oasis in the high desert. An almost fitting role to play as the small town began as a water stop for the Union Pacific Railroad in 1868. More than 150 years later, a few businesses still serve as stops for the weary traveler, though they offer far more than water now. On May 14 and 15, JB’s Stop-n-Shop and The Old W...

  • A growing alliance

    Joshua Wood|May 5, 2021

On a sunny, albeit breezy, day on April 18, members of the Saratoga Alliance Church gathered to observe the most recent groundbreaking for the growing congregation. While the event itself was important as it signaled growth, its connection to the church's origins were just as important. In 1978, Paul Stumbo, the Rocky Mountain District Superintent of the Christian and Missionary Alliance, walked into Mom's Kitchen in Saratoga looking for a group of people he had been told were interested in...

  • A severe case of the Mondays

    Joshua Wood|May 5, 2021

Murphy’s Law posits “Anything that can go wrong will go wrong”. A lesser known fact is that Murphy’s Law almost always coincides with a Monday. This is a fundamental basis of our universe, alongside the truths that cats will always land on their feet and toast will always land butter-side down. This Monday, May 3, is by far probably one of the most frustrating I’ve had in quite some time. For the first time since our July 31, 2019 edition I really thought there wouldn’t be a newspaper r... Full story

  • What you do when things go 'bump' in the night

    Bill Sniffin|May 5, 2021

My nervous “afraid of the dark” wife is amazed that her brave husband will get up in the middle of the night to check out all the strange noises she hears. This has been going on for more than half a century and, frankly, even I am impressed by my fearlessness. Patiently, during the entire time of our marriage, I have been awakened in the middle of deep slumber to a voice saying: “Honey, did you hear that?” I roll over and say, “What? I didn’t hear anything. Go back to sleep, it will be all right.” A few minutes later: “I can’t sleep. I...

  • Miners dig in at Mountain Man Invite

    Mike Armstrong|May 5, 2021

The Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) track team ventured off to Pinedale to participate in the Mountain Man Invitation on April 30. Eight teams competed. The HEM girls team came in 5th and the boys team came in 8th for a combined score that had them finish 7th. “It was actually a beautiful day over in Pinedale on Friday,” Head Coach Jackie Jones said. “We had better times and we got to see some different competition. We were able to see some new teams and it keeps things fresh. Pined...

  • Saratoga sees success in Riverton

    Joshua Wood|May 5, 2021

Saratoga’s student athletes traveled to central Wyoming on Saturday as they attended the Roy Peck Invitational in Riverton. With 20 girls teams and 16 boys teams, the competition was tough. Head Coach Rex Hohnholt’s track and field athletes, however, managed to find some placings. Girls at Riverton Beginning with track events, the 100 meter dash saw Savannah Wells finish with a time of 14.4 seconds and was followed by Olivia Everett with a time of 14.74 seconds and Jaden Campbell with a tim...

  • Personal bests at Peck

    Joshua Wood|May 5, 2021

Over the weekend, Encampment’s track and field athletes traveled to Riverton to compete in the Roy Peck Invitational. Though there were few placings for the small team at the large meet, there were some silver linings to be found. “This was a really big meet this week with some great competition,” said Head Coach Kegan Willford. “We had some of our athletes get some personal bests in this meet. It was good to see Amber (Stubbs) get a pre-qualifying time in the two-mile (run).” Girls at Rivert...

  • Mary Poppins a jolly holiday

    Joshua Wood|May 5, 2021

A spoonful of sugar may help the medicine go down, but it certainly wasn't needed for the production of "Mary Poppins" put on by the Carbon County School District No. 2 (CCSD2) Drama Club. Despite having to postpone their production last year due to the pandemic, the drama club took to the stage of the Platte Valley Community Center Theater on April 29 for their rendition of the classic children's book series made popular by the 1964 Disney movie. The titular role of Mary Poppins is played by...
