  • A white December after all

    Brian Trautwein|Dec 26, 2012

Heading into a winter predicted to be drier and warmer than normal, snowmobilers and skiers got some much-needed snow last week. The snow has been slow in coming this year. Highway 130 over the Snowy range and Highway 70 over the Sierra Madre range did not close until the end of the first week in December, the latest closing in a quarter century. Storm systems in November gave the snow pack a much-needed boost in the North Platte, White and Laramie River basins, but dry conditions in early...

  • JV sharpens skills

    Brian Trautwein|Dec 26, 2012

Encampment and Saratoga put their JV squads on the floor Thursday, and both the men and women had a chance to hone skills that will be featured on varsity teams in the coming years. The Saratoga men built up a commanding lead by the end of the first quarter in a game that see-sawed all the way to the end. Panther fouls repeatedly sent Encampment to the line in the second quarter and the Tigers took advantage of the free throws, cutting Saratoga’s lead to 1 point halfway through the quarter. E...

  • Snow permits controlled burn

    Brian Trautwein|Dec 26, 2012

Two years ago a grass fire east of town almost ignited a 20 year old pile of sawdust and old, dry logs at Squirrel Tree Automotive. The grass fire occurred on a Sunday and if Squirrel Tree Automotive owner Sterling Arnold had not been at his shop checking on his horses, he would not have been able to alert the fire department. Because of the old sawdust, it took two weeks for the embers of the grass fire to go out. Since then, Arnold has wanted to burn the pile of sawdust, and finally got a...

  • Tigers beat 3A Rawlins team: lose to Hayden

    Brian Trautwein|Dec 19, 2012

The 3A Rawlins Outlaws came to play the 1A Encampment Tigers (6-1), (2-0) last Tuesday night in a game that proved the Tigers could hang with anyone. Rawlins is a much bigger school than Encampment but that didn’t phase the Tigers. “It’s always the same,” head coach Dan Kraft said before the game. “We’ve got to play defense and rebound. It’s our strength and we’ve got to keep doing it every game.” The first quarter was physical, and the Tigers came out a little lack-luster against the Outla...

  • Panthers taste conference play

    Brian Trautwein|Dec 19, 2012

The Panther (2-4), (0-2) basketball team took two difficult losses away from this last weekends’ conference play in Lusk (9-0), (7-0) on Friday, and Pine Bluffs (4-3), (2-2) on Saturday. Although the Panthers were confident about competing in their first game, coach Sandlian said, “We have to compete for the whole game.” The men dropped the Lusk match 49-78 in a frustating game that the Panthers trailed for the first three quarters. Led by Hunter Dockery, who scored 28 points on his own, Lusk...

  • Grapplers have good showing at HEM, Kremmling

    Brian Trautwein|Dec 19, 2012

Saratoga won 15 matches in a Quadrangular meet Thursday night at Hanna-Elk Mountain-Medicine Bow (HEM) in the first of two meets. Saratoga, HEM and North Park competed in the match. Although the meet was more of a practice session, this was a chance for the wrestlers to get more experience under their belts. “It’s a good opportunity to get together and get some mat time instead of just wrestling ourselves,” head coach Jared Mason said. “It’s better than beating on our own guys.” Although the mee...

  • Lady Tigers notch first win; drop one to Hayden

    Brian Trautwein|Dec 19, 2012

The Rawlins Outlaws came to Encampment (1-6), (0-2) last Tuesday night and the Lady Tigers turned their season around with a strong 44-32 win. Although the Tigers are still working kinks out of their game plan, the team has started to mesh. Every player contributed to the success on Tuesday. Head coach Amy Clay said, “They are all working hard and doing what I ask.” That hard work paid off. Encampment pulled off their first win of the 2012-2013 season. The Lady tigers passed the ball around the...

  • Lady Panthers falter on road

    Brian Trautwein|Dec 19, 2012

The Lady Panthers (2-4), (0-2) started conference play over the weekend in Lusk on Friday night and Pine Bluffs on Saturday. Saratoga was short a couple of starters against Lusk and the Panthers quickly lost their lead after the first quarter. They never regained it and came away with an 18-45 loss. “We got into foul trouble early, we were missing a couple starters, and we could not score,” head coach Matt Love wrote in an email. “We were leading after the first quarter but then it got ugly....

  • Panthers send Wildcats scampering

    Brian Trautwein|Dec 12, 2012

The Saratoga men’s varsity basketball team evened their record to two and two with a 50 to 37 win at home this past weekend. The North Park Wildcats met the Panther team Saturday in a game that Saratoga dominated from the tip. The Panthers came out of the locker room ready to play, jumping out to a 14 to six lead by the end of the first quarter. But, a determined Wildcat team gave the Panthers a run for their money in the second quarter, scoring 23 unanswered points. “That was not a good qua...

  • Tigers roll through Rock River; squeak by North Park

    Brian Trautwein|Dec 12, 2012

The Encampment Tigers men’s basketball team came off of last week with two wins and will roll into the upcoming scheduled games with a 5-0 record. The Tigers beat Rock River and North Park, both games on the road. “We got two good wins under our belt,” coach Dan Kraft said. “We try to get better all the time.” Rock River’s Keith Smith tried to stump the Tigers by scoring 26 points, but the Tiger’s Waddie Love staved off Rock River with 23 points of his own. Backed by key efforts from teammates A...

  • Lady Tigers fail to find rhythm

    Brian Trautwein|Dec 12, 2012

The Encampment Ladies basketball team couldn’t bag a win on the road last Tuesday and Friday night against the Rock River Longhorns and the North Park Wildcats. Despite good play from the Tiger team, Encampment trailed the Longhorns for the entire match, finding themselves down 29-37 at the final buzzer. “We had the third quarter jinx going again as we scored 4 to their 14,” said head coach Amy Clay. The Wildcat team came out on top, but had trouble stopping Alyssa Barkhurst and Cassidy Littl...

    Brian Trautwein|Dec 12, 2012

With senior wrestlers at home taking ACTs, it was up to younger Saratoga grapplers to make a statement Dec. 8 at the Soroco Invitational, in Oak Creek, Colo. Five Saratoga wrestlers placed in four different weight classes at the tournaments’ conclusion. In the 106-weight class, Bradley Bifano and Daynon Mowry placed first and third respectively. “It is good to have guys of equal quality in the same weight class,” coach Jared Mason said. Bifano ruled his weight class, pinning a trio of Color...

    Brian Trautwein|Dec 12, 2012

The Lady Panthers caught fire in the fourth quarter and almost put away a game they trailed all afternoon Saturday. They ended up five points short of a win against the North Park Wildcats as the clock ran out on their rally. “The girls all played very hard but we definitely didn’t play up to our abilities,” head coach Matt Love said. Eight Panthers contributed on Saturday night with Shelby McGuire and Justine Fourman tallying 10 points apiece. The duo was all over the offensive effort scori...

  • Saratoga sawmill draws closer to production

    Brian Trautwein|Dec 12, 2012

As the production date for the Saratoga sawmill draws closer, there are still a few more positions to be filled. The mill currently has 30 employees but needs 80 by its start date later this month “Finding enough employees was a concern, but it is turning out good so far,” Saratoga Forest Management owner, Gary Ervin said. “There are not many spots left, but there is always room for good help.” In addition to actual mill workers, the logging side of the operation employs 40 people locally...
