Lady Tigers fail to find rhythm

The Encampment Ladies basketball team couldn’t bag a win on the road last Tuesday and Friday night against the Rock River Longhorns and the North Park Wildcats.

Despite good play from the Tiger team, Encampment trailed the Longhorns for the entire match, finding themselves down 29-37 at the final buzzer.

“We had the third quarter jinx going again as we scored 4 to their 14,” said head coach Amy Clay.

The Wildcat team came out on top, but had trouble stopping Alyssa Barkhurst and Cassidy Little. Barkhurst scored 16 of the Tigers 37 points, and shook up North Park with 6 steals. Little backed her team with 9 points and owned the paint with an outstanding 12 rebounds. Jennifer Morgan and Taylor Pedersen collected 2 points apiece on the night.

“The girls played hard,” Clay said. “Rock River was aggressive and pushed the ball at us. Coach Stucky has those girls playing well.”

On Friday night, the Lady Tigers struggled to find their rhythm.

“The first quarter we scored 2 points to their 20,” Clay said. “They scored the first 8 and we could never recover. We must start quicker to be successful.”

Alyssa Barkhurst had another good offensive showing knocking down 12 points followed again by Cassidy Little with 7 points in the 53 to 25 loss.

On defense, Jennifer Morgan blocked four shots but could not slow the Wildcats’ offense.

The physicality of the game gave the Tigers pause and took away some of their intensity.

“Their post player gave us fits,” Clay said. “She cut well, shot well and rebounded well.”

The Lady Tigers played Tuesday night, but the results were not available as of press time. The next match is Friday on the road against Hayden, Colo.

With only one senior on the team, the Tigers lack experience, but will get plenty of experience as the season progresses.

“I expect them to recover and get after it in the next game,” Clay said. “We have to rebound better on both ends and make better passes on offense.”
