Wrestlers show strength at Soroco invitational

With senior wrestlers at home taking ACTs, it was up to younger Saratoga grapplers to make a statement Dec. 8 at the Soroco Invitational, in Oak Creek, Colo.

Five Saratoga wrestlers placed in four different weight classes at the tournaments’ conclusion.

In the 106-weight class, Bradley Bifano and Daynon Mowry placed first and third respectively.

“It is good to have guys of equal quality in the same weight class,” coach Jared Mason said.

Bifano ruled his weight class, pinning a trio of Colorado wrestlers, proving the adage, “you can’t win on your back.”

Mowry battled back through the consolation rounds with a pin and a pair of decisions. One of those decisions came against Caden Feenstra, of Monarch, Colo., who had beaten Mowry by fall earlier in the day.

Chaze Wiant split the day with two wins and two losses. Both losses came against Tanner Guire, of Hayden, Colo.

A 0-3 decision kept Thatcher Spiering out of first place in the 120 class, but a couple of earlier pins ensured a second place spot.

After three pins, Marshal Hill was on his way to a first place finish in the 138-pound class, but came up short in a loss to Anthony Walt, of Meeker, Colo.

“I’m pleased with how the youngsters did,” Mason said.

Hazer Hinkle, at 220 pounds, didn’t place but recorded his first win of the year.

With their seniors back, the Panthers will have a full squad on the mats when they wrestle next at Hanna in the Quadrangular on Dec. 13.
