    Staff Report|Dec 26, 2012

Snowmobilers should be aware that over-the-snow logging will be taking place along Forest Road 100 this season on private land within the Medicine Bow National Forest. A two and a half mile stretch of the road, which runs through both National Forest and private land, will be closed to all public traffic until the snow no longer needs to be plowed next spring. • Are you still here?

    Keith McLendon|Dec 26, 2012

Well, the world is still here. This development has caught me off guard and I had prepared nothing new in the way of “entertainment” for you to read. Fortunately for me this world- continuing thing has fallen squarely during the “week between Christmas” and it has been tradition for the two previous years now that I print my sad attempt at poetry. I think this year though I will try to break down or give some rationale to the events chronicled in this poem. The first part is, to me, pretty on th...

  • A white December after all

    Brian Trautwein|Dec 26, 2012

Heading into a winter predicted to be drier and warmer than normal, snowmobilers and skiers got some much-needed snow last week. The snow has been slow in coming this year. Highway 130 over the Snowy range and Highway 70 over the Sierra Madre range did not close until the end of the first week in December, the latest closing in a quarter century. Storm systems in November gave the snow pack a much-needed boost in the North Platte, White and Laramie River basins, but dry conditions in early... Full story

    Dec 26, 2012

A comprehensive U.S. Forest Service report released Dec. 18 examines the ways expanding populations, increased urbanization and changing land-use patterns could impact natural resources, including water supplies, nationwide during the next 50 years. The study shows the potential for significant loss of privately-owned forests to development and fragmentation, which could substantially reduce benefits from forests that the public now enjoys including clean water, wildlife habitat and forest products. U.S. Forest Service scientists and partners... Full story

The Saratoga men built up a commanding lead by the end of the first quarter in a game that see-sawed all the way to the end. • Snow permits controlled burn

    Brian Trautwein|Dec 26, 2012

Two years ago a grass fire east of town almost ignited a 20 year old pile of sawdust and old, dry logs at Squirrel Tree Automotive. The grass fire occurred on a Sunday and if Squirrel Tree Automotive owner Sterling Arnold had not been at his shop checking on his horses, he would not have been able to alert the fire department. Because of the old sawdust, it took two weeks for the embers of the grass fire to go out. Since then, Arnold has wanted to burn the pile of sawdust, and finally got a...
