Vanessa King was the only Cross Country runner to place at state this year - and she is a freshman. King placed eighth place at state, and when she first started running, it was because she was encouraged by her dad who had run cross country. He was placed at state. King didn’t have an interest in volleyball, so upon the urging of her dad, she ran cross country for the first time this year. During the season, she shaved off more than five minutes off her time. She ran the t...
Senior Josie Little had her 1000th dig toward the end of the 2024 Volleyball season. At the last home game in October, her coach Shayley Love surprised her with a poster. Little admits she checks her statistics after each game, so she can make goals for the next game because she wants to get better. “It’s not a priority for me, but it is fun to see how I did after each game,” Little said. She ended the season with 363 digs, which means she averaged more in the first three...
Saturday morning the chance to place at State Volleyball slipped through the fingers of the Encampment Lady Tigers by 2 points. The fact that this team made it that far is an accomplishment in itself as the team had six starters with only three on the bench. Most of the teams they competed against at State had more players on their bench than the Tigers had on their team. Lady Tigers Head Coach Janice Peterson said she and assistant coach Annie Jordan were very impressed with...
For another year, the Encampment Tigers were unable to make it past the semifinal round of the 1A Six-Man Playoffs to walk into War Memorial Stadium. With their season at an end, they can take pride in the fact that their loss to the Burlington Huskies was a hard fought match. If playing in Laramie is the ultimate goal, then battling the defending state champions into triple-overtime is surely a close second. “I’m super proud of everyone on the team. They left everything they...
Former University of Wyoming Cowboy Carl Granderson and the New Orleans Saints ended their seven-game slide on Sunday against Atlanta. He defended two passes in the 20-17 victory. For the season, Granderson lays claim to 34 tackles, 3.5 sacks, five tackles for loss, one forced fumble and six quarterback hits for 3-7 New Orleans. The Saints host the Browns in Week 11. Below is a list of the other former Wyoming Cowboys and how they performed in Week 10. Josh Allen, Buffalo Bills Allen wasn’t his sharpest Sunday at I...
The Saratoga Panthers lost their path to the 1A-nine man championship football game in War Memorial Stadium on November 8 in Pine Bluffs. After putting up their best season in 17 years, the Panthers succumbed to the Hornet’s nest in a 12-42 defeat. The Saratoga team was shutout the first half of the game with two interceptions thrown by Jace Westring and caught by Pine Bluff’s Carsten Freeburg. ‘We fell behind early and struggled to stop their running game,” said Head Coach J...
The Saratoga Lady Panthers’ season came to an end last weekend as they went 0-2 at the 1A West Regional Tournament in Lander. While they may not be playing at the Ford Wyoming Center in Casper, Head Coach Shayley Love is no less proud of her team. “The regional tournament was one of the most competitive regional tournaments we have competed in,” said Love. “I felt like the girls truly competed with both Riverside and Dubois with tight matches.” Despite ultimately being knocked...
Though they saw their undefeated streak come to an end in the final game of the regular season, the Encampment Tigers appeared to shake off their loss to the Little Snake River Valley (LSRV) Rattlers for the 1A Six-Man Playoffs. On November 1, No. 2 South-ranked Tigers hosted the No. 3 North-ranked Kaycee Buckaroos. Kaycee came into the quarterfinals with a season record of 4-4 and a conference record of 3-3, compared to the Tigers season record of 6-1 and conference record...
“It was a battle, but these girls are warriors and they proved they were ready for the fight,” Head Coach Janice Peterson said. For the first time since 2017, the Encampment Lady Tigers are going to the State Competition in Casper this weekend. “It was an exciting tournament,” Janice Peterson said. “We played 17 games to earn third place and the girls found a way to win.” Their only loss was to the Little Snake River Valley (LSRV) Lady Rattlers, who placed 1st in the 1A West...
The last time the Saratoga Panthers made it past the quarterfinals in the postseason playoffs was in 11 man 2A football in 2007. The Panthers accomplished a semi-final advancement with another nail-biting game against the Shoshoni Wranglers, the 2A West number one seed on November 1. “What a great playoff game and exciting win for the Panthers,” said Head Coach Jared Mason. “It has been a long time coming, and I'm so proud of the effort from every player who continues to put in their best effort.” The game by all account...
In the first half of their home game against the Little Snake River Valley (LSRV) Rattlers, the Encampment Tigers managed to lead three times. No small feat against one of the top teams in both the 1A South Conference and the state. Both teams took to the gridiron with an undefeated record with only one assurance: someone would leave with their winning streak ended. When the final game of the regular season came to an end, the Tigers found themselves on the losing side of a...
It wasn’t an easy end to the regular season for the Saratoga Lady Panthers, being dealt three conference losses in the final week. On October 22, the Lady Panthers fell to the Encampment Lady Tigers in five sets (see “Valley rematch comes down to the wire” on page A1 of the October 24 Saratoga Sun). Then, on October 24, the Little Snake River Valley (LSRV) Lady Rattlers left the Panther Den dealing a loss in three sets to Saratoga. On October 26, the Farson-Eden Lady Prong...
The Saratoga Panther cross-country team finished their season at state in Cheyenne on October 26 with freshman Vanessa King earning all state honors. “A big congratulations goes out to our newest All-State performer, Vanessa King,” said Head Coach Rex Hohnholt. “A great honor for you Vanessa and you and others are just scratching the surface of what you can achieve in the future.” While the teams did not stand on the podium for a team win — the gains made over the course of...
The Encampment Lady Tigers are going to State Regionals as a 3rd seed in the Southwest Conference. With a record of 5-4 in the conference and 9-7 overall, the girls have a chance to get a spot in the state bracket, but they will have to get past the Burlington Lady Huskies first. The top four teams of the 1A West Regionals go to the state championship in Casper, November 8-10. The 1A West Conference is held in Lander and Encampment will play the Lady Huskies (7-2) (15-9) at...
The Saratoga Lady Panthers are sitting at No. 4 in the 1A Southwest Conference—just ahead of Farson-Eden and Fort Washakie—following two tough losses during homecoming. On Friday, Saratoga hosted the Southeast Lady Cyclones where they went 2-3 against the No. 1 team in the 1A Southeast. Then, on Saturday, the Lady Panthers hosted the Cokeville Lady Panthers where they were dealt a conference loss in three sets. Saratoga vs. Southeast On Friday, the Lady Panther saw mom...
The Encampment Tigers kept their winning streak going on October 18, dealing a nearly 50-point homecoming loss to the Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) Miners. The victory over the Miners adds yet another conference win for Encampment, who has sat all season at the top of the 1A South Six-Man Conference with the Little Snake River Valley (LSRV) Rattlers. HEM, meanwhile, is near the bottom of the conference with a narrow conference win against Casper Christian. “I t...
The Encampment K-12 gym was filled with a raucous roar as Valley residents cheered on their favorite team: either the Encampment Lady Tigers or the Saratoga Lady Panthers. They all had good reason to cheer as the fight for the top valley team went to five sets. The Lady Tigers came out of the match victorious, but it wasn’t without some swipes from the Lady Panthers. 1st Set The first set began with the Tigers and Panthers tied at 4, foreshadowing how the fifth set would p...
As their season of firsts comes to an end, the Saratoga Panthers made it to the 9-man playoffs for the first time since 2020 under [then] Head Coach Logan Wright. The Panthers had possibly one of their best seasons in 40 years catching a win over Lusk [first in 20 years] and a win over Wright overcoming a low scoring game battle putting double digits on the board. The Panthers have earned a playoff berth as the 4th seed heading into the post season prior to even competing in...
The Encampment Lady Tigers pulled out two wins and one loss last week. Even with the loss against Cokeville, the Lady Tigers walked off the court Saturday afternoon knowing one thing—Cokeville can be beat. Encampment vs. HEM On October 15, the Lady Tigers (4-3) won three sets against the Hanna-Elk Mountain-Medicine Bow (HEM) Lady Miners (1-8) at Hanna. While the Lady Miners are not in the same conference as the Lady Tigers, they both in Carbon County School District No.2. H...
After tearing through two other conference rivals, the Encampment Tigers nearly saw their undefeated streak ended as they hosted the Dubois Rams on October 11. On paper, it looked as if the Rams would have been an easy match for Encampment as they had dealt a 59-6 loss to the Farson-Eden Pronghorns and an 82-33 loss to Casper Christian over the past two weeks. Leading up to the match, the Rams were ranked No. 3 in the 1A South Conference with a season record of 2-2 and a confe...
For most of their season, the Saratoga Panthers had defied expectations. On their third coach in three years, the Panthers secured a win over Lusk for the first time since 2004. They followed that up with their third win in three years over the Wright Panthers, this time with a double-digit lead. Last year, they felled Wright 6-0 and the year before they won 4-0. It’s been history in the making for both Saratoga Panthers fans and high school football fans. As was noted by P...
On Tuesday, September 17 the volleyball gym turned the color of teal in honor and in remembrance of Laurie Johnston, who lost her battle with ovarian cancer in August. Laurie was a coach in Saratoga and Encampment for over 40 years and was a referee for many of the volleyball games. Coach Shayley Love, Athletic Director Greg Bartlett and booster club volunteer Karen Condict felt the Valley competition would be the perfect opportunity to show Johnston honor and respect. Coach...
The Saratoga Panthers cross country team ended their regular season in Cheyenne at the Leroy Sprague Invitational Meet on Friday, October 11. The varsity team racers continued to improve their individual times leading up to the state championship which will also be held in Cheyenne. “The performances from our high school kids left me very optimistic heading into the state cross-country meet held in two weeks,” said Head Coach Rex Hohnholt. “It was great to see all the athletes challenge themselves on what I think is the t...
The Northwest Conference team of Burlington’s Lady Huskies are undefeated in their conference this season with a record of 7-0, and the Encampment Lady Tigers (3-3) got a taste of going up against this team Oct. 12 at the Kaycee Tournament. The Lady Tigers took a few licks from the Huskies, but the opposing team had to do it in three sets. The Lady Tigers fell in the first set 18-25, but came back to beat the Lady Huskies in the second set 25-20. The third set ended with a s...
Smoke was in the air on October 4 as Saratoga hosted the Wright Panthers for a 1A 9-man conference game. While the smoke came from the fires in the northwest part of the state, it could have just as easily come from the defensive battle on the gridiron in the first half of the game. Saratoga boasted a 14-6 win against the Wright Panthers extending the team’s 2024 undefeated streak with the Saratoga Panthers’ total yardage exceeding Wright’s 290 to 204. “It was a big win for...
