Wyoming’s four-match winning streak snapped
The Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team came up just short on the road against conference-leading New Mexico Sunday. Wyoming’s four match winning streak was snapped as its comeback fell shy, losing 4-3.
The Cowgirls (15-9, 6-3 MW) got out to an early lead thanks to a marathon win in doubles. Wyoming got a 6-2 win at No. 1 from the duo of Violetta Borodina and Sophie Zehender. The tandem extends their program record for single-season doubles victories with 27 this season with the win. The Cowgirls clinched the doubles point at No. 2 as the team of Noesjka Brink and Nikol Dobrilova won their tiebreak, 10-8 to come out on top, 7-6.
New Mexico came out in singles and won the first three decisions on the day to stake a 3-1 lead overall in the match. However, UW would rally, winning at both No. 1 and No. 2 to knot the match up at 3-3. Zehender rallied to win in three sets at the first spot, 6-7 (3-7), 6-4 and 6-3. Brink also came-from-behind to earn a three-set victory, winning 5-7, 7-5 and 6-1. Brink now has 26 singles wins overall this season and is just two shy of tying the single-season program record. The Lobos ultimately clinched the match with a hard-fought, three set victory at the No. 3 singles position.
Wyoming will conclude its regular season Friday at Border Rival Colorado State in a 3:30 p.m., matchup with the Rams.
