When it comes to traveling in Carbon County, there are many unsung heroes who make it possible. Chief amongst those are the employees of the Carbon County Road and Bridge Department. On September 7, Encampment resident Gary Jacobsen appeared before the Board of Carbon County Commissioners (BOCCC) to change that. In what Jacobsen would later call a “good precedent”, he proposed the county commissioners consider naming the road and bridge building in Encampment to honor long time employee Dav...
As growth continues to come to Saratoga, the topic of affordable housing appears to be becoming more and more relevant. In May 2021, Saratoga resident Steve Niccolls appeared before the Saratoga Planning Commission and requested the board examine what options were available. For several months, that discussion didn’t appear to take place until the September 21 meeting of the Saratoga Town Council when the subject was raised by Councilmember Ron Hutchins. Now the topic has been brought up, it m...

It is sometimes hard for me not to miss the life I had overseas because, often, it was a lot of fun. At one point I was writing for a magazine where my job was going to different nightclubs in Taipei reviewing their “Ladies Night.” My work at the magazine was part-time because I lived in Taichung, a three to four hour bus ride away. Back then the train was not much faster. although that has changed. Using the ‘Bullet Train’, a person can be in Taipei from Taichung in an hour-and-half. The oth...
The Little Snake River Valley (LSRV) Lady Rattlers received a bit of a break from conference play this weekend as they competed in the Bobcat Invitational in Thermopolis. Though other 1A conference teams were in attendance, the Lady Rattlers were able to test their skills against higher conference teams with, mostly, positive results. LSRV faced the Rocky Mountain Lady Grizzlies, the Burlington Lady Huskies, the Big Piney Lady Punchers, the Riverside Lady Rebels and the Thermopolis Lady...
The Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) Miner football team would have been within their rights to consider not playing last week when the roster could only field six players to face a team which had nearly double the players. “We only had six and with them not being able to rest at all, there is just little chance of us winning against a team that can rest players,” Head Coach Zack Scott said. “I am so proud of these boys because they fought hard, tried their best and never gave up. I thi...

The Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) Lady Miners were at home and away for a split weekend for two conference matches. The Lady Miners hosted the Guernsey-Sunrise Lady Vikings on October 1 and were hosted by the Rock River Lady Longhorns on October 2. Lady Miners vs. Lady Vikings "This was our third meeting with Guernsey this season so we knew somewhat to expect, however volleyball is such a mental sport that you never feel fully prepared," Head Coach Tiera Scott said. "We were down on of...
The Saratoga Panthers played well against the Lingle-Ft. Laramie (Lingle) Doggers on Friday evening but, at the end, could not quite pull off the win according to Head Coach Logan Wright. "If we had three or four minutes left in the game instead of two when we got the ball back," Wright said, "I think we would have scored and won." Wright believes the Panthers were equal to the team the Doggers fielded for the October 1 game. "Their team had three big plays that they scored on and that was the...
While the Platte River may be low this time of year, a minor flood occurred in front of the Saratoga Town Hall during the October 5 meeting of the Saratoga Town Council. As the governing body was going about their twice-monthly meeting, Sergeant Tyler Christen requested a short recess for council members to use their vehicles. Upon exiting the front of the town hall, water could be seen bubbling up from under Spring Street and running towards 1st Street. The large break caused a sudden loss in...
