Fearless Miners face Midwest Oilers

HEM football fields six against Midwest in weekend game

The Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) Miner football team would have been within their rights to consider not playing last week when the roster could only field six players to face a team which had nearly double the players.

“We only had six and with them not being able to rest at all, there is just little chance of us winning against a team that can rest players,” Head Coach Zack Scott said. “I am so proud of these boys because they fought hard, tried their best and never gave up. I think that is a win in itself. It shows integrity and dignity and I couldn’t be prouder.”

The team this year has nine players, but three were out sick.

One of the players, Joseph Borah had knee surgery on October 1 and is likely out for the rest of the season, making the team eight players.

Scott said the players keep themselves up with reinforcing each players determination to play well.

“We are a good team, and at the very least we help keep other’s spirits up,” Scott said. “We push each other through the adversity and they do great this way. They never stop fighting.”

Dylan Romero passed for 81.3 yards and had two sacks. Howard Bame passed for 18.8 yards and defensively got an interception. Jared Nelson returned a kickoff return for 35 yards. The team had 10 tackles. Cody Priest, Rayce Ward and Jesse Deegan rushed and did their best on defense.

The score of 50-0 doesn’t tell the heart of these players said Scott.

“I am super proud of these six kids,” Scott said. “I really can’t say enough good about these boys.”

The HEM Miners will host the Encampment Tigers on October 9.
