    Dana Davis|Oct 7, 2020

The Encampment Town Council held a special meeting October 1, 2020 to decide which bid to accept for a new truck for Police Chief Kevin Shue. The meeting lasted less than 10 minutes. Shue said that he researched the company that had put in the bid for the trucks with the light kits already installed and was concerned because he could not find any information on the company prior to July of this year. The council agreed that since that company was also out of state and new, they would not go...

  • Loving what I do

    Joshua Wood|Oct 7, 2020

A few weeks ago the 1st grade class from Saratoga Elementary School was getting a tour of downtown Saratoga from Sherry McCay, a volunteer with the Saratoga Museum. As they made their way down Bridge Avenue, they stopped in front of the Saratoga Sun where Sherry began telling them about the newspaper. Even though it was a Monday, deadline day for our small weekly paper, I opened the door and asked if the students would like a tour of the newspaper office. Fortunately, their teachers appeared to... Full story

  • Tailgating at the PVCC

    Staff Report|Oct 7, 2020

As the warmth of the summer months give way into the cooler days of fall, there’s nothing that hits the spot quite like a bowl of chili. Additionally, there’s nothing in the fall quite like a good tailgate party. In that vein of thinking, the Saratoga/Platte Valley Chamber of Commerce (S/PVCC) is hosting their inaugural Tailgate Party Fundraiser during the upcoming Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs game. A great tailgate doesn’t happen without some good food or some good drinks, though. The S/PVCC is asking anyone who has a great chili...

  • Classic theatrics

    Mike Armstrong|Oct 7, 2020

When the Parco Sinclair Theater first opened its doors in 1924, the interior walls were hand painted and the seating was top notch for its time. Its exterior was like the rest of the company town; a unique Spanish style. For years, the Sinclair Oil Corporation owned the theater along with almost the rest of the town. In 1968 residents could purchase homes and the Town purchased the theater. The theater stopped showing movies in the 1960's and there was an attempt to keep the theater going in...

  • Lady Panthers take down Lady Pronghorns

    Joshua Wood|Oct 7, 2020

The Saratoga Lady Panthers appear to still be finding their feet this season as they went 1-1 against two conference foes last week. On Thursday, they hosted the Farson-Eden Lady Pronghorns (6-4, 2-2) and were hosted by the Encampment Lady Tigers (4-5, 1-3) on Friday. Both matches were a battle for Saratoga as they went across four sets on Thursday and five sets on Friday. Lady Panthers vs. Lady Pronghorns When Farson-Eden hosted the Lady Panthers just a week before, Saratoga sunk their claws in...

  • HEM undermines Oilers

    Mike Armstrong|Oct 7, 2020

After going 0-3 this season, a homecoming win was important to the Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) High School Miners according to Head Coach Zach Scott. It was senior day, in addition to homecoming, and the players did not disappoint the fans that came to watch, hoping to see the team's first victory. The Miners not only got a win, but they looked like the team that decimated opponents last year when they went to the championships. The majority of the 1st quarter went entirely to the...

  • Longhorns evade Tigers

    Joshua Wood|Oct 7, 2020

The Encampment Tigers were dealt their first defeat on their home field this week as they hosted the No. 1 Meeteetse Longhorns (5-0, 4-0) on Saturday. The undefeated Longhorns handed Encampment their second conference loss of the season, as they fell to the No. 2 Farson-Eden Pronghorns on September 26. Though the Tigers would put up plenty of resistance for Meeteetsee in the first half of the game, the second half saw the Longhorns put their heads down and push through Encampment for the final...

  • Panthers dog Lingle-Fort Laramie

    Mike Armstrong|Oct 7, 2020

The Saratoga Panthers continued their winning ways on Friday against Lingle/Fort Laramie, coming out on top 66-43. "We are getting better," Logan Wright, Panther head coach said. "The thing about losing, it gives you specific tasks to improve on and that is what we have done. I think the game against Lingle is the best game we played this year." Saratoga was not the first team to score. The Doggers scored with 10 minutes left in the 1st quarter. "We knew we had to stop the run," Wright said....

  • Lady Tigers take down Lady Panthers

    Joshua Wood|Oct 7, 2020

The Encampment Lady Tigers had only one game last week, the results of which may prove to propel them into the remainder of the season. On Friday, the Lady Tigers hosted their conference and Valley rivals the Saratoga Lady Panthers (6-6, 3-3) and went 3-2 for their first win against Saratoga in three years. The victory for the Lady Tigers also served as the first conference win of the season as the regional tournament rapidly approaches. "We've been working really, really hard on playing clean a...

  • Lady Miners conquer Guernsey-Sunrise

    Mike Armstrong|Oct 7, 2020

It was senior day and Homecoming and the Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) High School Lady Miners wanted to give their fans a day to remember. Steve Priest, principal of HEM, was keeping close tabs on the crowd to make sure it didn't surpass 250 people. Masks were required at all times for fans, but the coverings didn't mute the shouts of support as the Lady Miners took on Guernsey-Sunrise. • Town of Hanna honors RR 316 responders

    Mike Armstrong|Oct 7, 2020

The last time the Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) High School Miners played at home over the Labor Day weekend, on September 5, there was ominous black smoke billowing into the clear blue skies. By the time the game ended at 2:30 p.m., several planes were flying overhead dumping retardant and water to stop an out-of-control fire just a couple miles outside of town. By 5 p.m. the town had called for a mandatory evacuation and fire departments from all over the county, the state and...

  • Comfort in hard times

    Dana Davis|Oct 7, 2020

It may seem odd for a coroner to hold an open house but that is exactly what Carbon County Coroner Paul Zamora did this past Saturday. Even though he was unable to attend, the event was a success. People were talking about it on the streets of Rawlins, saying how unexpectedly interesting it was. Brittany Nyman, Deputy Coroner, provided a tour. The first two rooms upon entering the building are offices. Zamora's is decorated with display cases showing artifacts he has collected over the years....
