Traditionally, the decision to designate an official publication has been made by the BOCCC during their final meeting of the fiscal year, which runs from July to June. According to BOCCC Chairman John Johnson, however, a letter had been received from the Rawlins Times requesting the newspaper be... Full story

  • Tabled tap approved

    Joshua Wood|Jan 15, 2020

During the January 7 meeting of the Saratoga Town Council, the governing body approved a water tap for Saratoga resident Randy Stevens. Following the approval of the tap, however, it seemed that where the town council dictated the placement of the meter pit was not the location Stevens was requesting. As was reported previously (see “Tap tabled by Town” on page 13 of the December 25, 2019 Saratoga Sun), Stevens was sent to the Saratoga Town Council following a 4-3 vote from the Carbon Cou...

  • An Advocate for Carbon County Tourism

    Mike Armstrong|Jan 15, 2020

The holidays have just finished and, with them, have come in messages from friends all over the world. There were a few from friends overseas that wonder when I am going to come back. It is a fair question in a way. Although I bought my first home in Saratoga back in 1998 and my second house in Hanna a couple years later, for almost the past two decades I made my living out of this country. I would come back to Wyoming for a few months and then head back to where jobs were a bit more plentiful.... Full story

    Joshua Wood|Jan 15, 2020

For the 4th year in a row, the non-profit group Mother Mountain Anglers (MMA) held their annual Kids' Ice Fishing Clinic on January 11. With a cloudy sky Saturday morning, a departure from previous years, the number of people in attendance at first appeared to be low. Shortly before the starting time of 9 a.m., however, trucks and cars descended towards Treasure Island Pond. This marked the second consecutive year that MMA held their clinic on Silver Spur property. After the young anglers were...

    Mike Armstrong|Jan 15, 2020

By Mike Armstrong Head Coach Jared Mason was pleased with the Panther wrestling team at their meet on Friday and Saturday. “Overall the Panthers wrestled well at the Zach Parish Memorial dual tournament in Shoshoni,” Mason said. “Everyone wrestled with a lot of heart and gave their best effort throughout the day.” The Panthers had seven wrestlers attend the event which featured 12 schools. “With only seven wrestlers competing in a 14 weight line-up didn’t give us much of a chance for overall...

  • Lady Tigers dealt conference loss

    Joshua Wood|Jan 15, 2020

The Encampment Lady Tigers got their first taste of conference play last week as they were hosted by the Saratoga Lady Panthers on January 9. Despite keeping close with Saratoga for most of the game, the Lady Tigers would eventually fall by 9 points in the final minutes of the game. "I thought this was a good game for us, but we didn't get enough players involved in the offense to get a win," said Clint Bromley, head coach of the Lady Tigers. "It was exciting to watch and was a 2-point game...

  • Stay strong all the time

    Joshua Wood|Jan 15, 2020

The Saratoga Lady Panthers appear to be off to a good start as they put their first conference win under their belt on Thursday night. Hosting their Valley rivals, the Encampment Lady Tigers, Saratoga was able to celebrate a victory for their home opener. Despite the win, Head Coach Heather Bartlett still sees room for improvement with her team. In addition to the win against Encampment, the Lady Panthers travelled to Kemmerer over the weekend to compete in the Fossil Classic Tournament. While...

    Joshua Wood|Jan 15, 2020

The beginning of conference play for the Encampment Tigers began in the Valley, as they were hosted by the Saratoga Panthers for their first home game of the season. While Saratoga attempted to secure a win for the home crowd on January 9, the Tigers' early lead saw Encampment to their first conference win of the season. "Thursday was a good basketball game," said Jake Johnston, head coach of the Tigers. "Both teams played hard and well. I thought we shared the ball well as a team. Saratoga is...

  • Panthers have 'no regrets'

    Joshua Wood|Jan 15, 2020

The Panther Den was the place to be on Thursday night as the Saratoga Panthers hosted the Encampment Tigers for their home opener of the season. Saratoga and Encampment both went into the game with zero losses as conference play began, but ultimately one would have to win. Unfortunately for the Panthers, Encampment would depart the hardwood with a victory over Saratoga. In addition to hosting the Tigers, the Saratoga boys hit the road where they played the 4A Star Valley Braves junior varsity...

    Joshua Wood|Jan 15, 2020

The Saratoga Talk Jocks returned to speaking and debating over the weekend as they competed in the Kelly Walsh Speech Tournament on January 10 and 11 in Casper. Following the winter break, all four members of the Saratoga Speech and Debate Team are now competing at the varsity level. This upgrade for the former junior varsity members appeared to do little to dampen their drive. Kaitlyn Campbell, who began as junior varsity, advanced to the semifinals round in Extemporaneous Speaking. Veteran...

  • A shot in the arm

    Joshua Wood|Jan 15, 2020

"I just remember showing up at the chamber office about three in the morning, looking down the highway and seeing all these headlights coming and I realized it was going to work. Until then, no one knew." This weekend, anglers will take to the frozen surface of Saratoga Lake for the 37th Annual Saratoga Ice Fishing Derby. The event, which has been a financial boon for Saratoga and the Valley, was begun by Chuck "C.J." Box shortly after being hired as the director of the Saratoga/Platte Valley... Full story

  • Riverside talks Green Mountain

    Dana Davis|Jan 15, 2020

The Riverside Town Council meeting January 9, in large part, was an update from guests Sid Fox, Carbon County Planning Director, and Sue Jones, Carbon County Commissioner, regarding Brush Creek Ranch’s ski area. The County Commissioners had approved some conditions for the Carbon County/Encampment Ski Area in the form of covenants back in 2001. Fox said, “They couldn’t get any permits for dwellings without coming back for zoning approval, site specific zoning” with the original approva...

  • Encampment appeals to UPRSWDD

    Joshua Wood|Jan 15, 2020

Over the past several months, a large part of discussion at meetings of the Upper Platte River Solid Waste Disposal District (UPRSWDD) has centered around consolidated billing. The discussion began in the spring of 2019 and culminated in the UPRSWDD presenting one-year contracts to the Town of Saratoga, the Town of Encampment and the Town of Riverside before the end of their fiscal years. Since then, the district has appeared to be moving toward their goal. At the January 8 meeting of the...

    Mike Armstrong|Jan 15, 2020

When Vivian Gonzales came into the Hanna Recreation Center on December 17, the place was flooded. Pipes had burst in the kitchen area and water made its way, almost, to the aerobic room. The director of the recreation center knew the repairs were going to shut the facility down for some time but she didn't dare guess for how long. She recounted the events leading to the recreation center's closing. "We estimate the pipes burst on Monday morning at 2:30 to 3 a.m. Gonzales said. "When Dale...

  • Evolving emergency management

    Joshua Wood|Jan 15, 2020

Carbon County appears to be facing a two-fold dilemma that has transpired over the past few years. While the number of emergency calls has increased, the number of volunteers to respond to those calls has decreased. This is according to Carbon County Fire Warden John Rutherford, who provided information to the Board of Carbon County Commissioners (BOCCC) on January 7. Rutherford also recommended the county commissioners consider creating full-time positions for both the fire warden and Carbon Co...
