  • Keeping early warning in the air

    Liz Wood|Nov 11, 2015

Curt Campbell was 17 years old when he joined the military. The Nuremberg trials were going on and he wanted to be a guard at those trials in 1948. The problem was the military wanted the guards to be 6 feet tall. Campbell was only 5 foot 7 inches. A couple of things were pushing him toward the military, Campbell said. His buddy's number was coming up to enter the draft. At 16, a judge told Campbell he had a terrible temper and asked him if he thought about using it somewhere useful - like the...

  • Valley athletes can hold their heads high

    Liz Wood|Nov 4, 2015

The Platte Valley fall sports season ended with all kinds of results. Cross Country placed second in the state. Our football team did not make it to the post season. The Saratoga Lady Panther Volleyball team had a great season, made it to regionals and fought hard to stay in. With the luck of the draw, they played the toughest teams in the conference, but they didn’t give up. To take Pine Bluffs to five sets is a real accomplishment. The Encampment Lady Tigers Volleyball team still have their s...

  • Tigers leap onward to state

    Liz Wood|Nov 4, 2015

If the Encampment Lady Tigers play at state like they did at regionals, they will be coming home with a first place trophy. The Lady Tigers easily beat St. Stephens Friday morning 25-8, 25-10, 25-9. Friday night they played Cokeville, a team they are familiar with. They lost the first set 21-25, but followed up with three wins 25-20, 25-18, 25-17, for the match. Saturday afternoon, the Lady Tigers squashed Little Snake River Valley in the championship game 25-13, 25-12, 25-18. "I don't even...

  • Tigers go into post-season with high expectations

    Liz Wood|Oct 28, 2015

Why not us? That phrase has been the Encampment Lady Tigers (5-0, 20-1 overall) mantra this season. And they have lived by that mantra on the court. As a team that has come together through the season with only one loss in their overall record, they are proving that this year, it just may be them. But head coach Robin O'Leary is still playing one game at a time. Friday, the Lady Tigers will compete in 2015 1A West Regional Volleyball Tournament in Lander. Their first opponent is St. Stephens,...

  • Cross country team ready for state

    Liz Wood|Oct 21, 2015

Saratoga Cross County Head Coach Rex Hohnholt had words of encouragement for his harriers Friday after they ran to qualify for state. They could spend a long day on the bus and compete in one last race before state or the team could try for their best times in Saratoga. Hohnholt chose to keep them in Saratoga. Friday, they travel to Sheridan before getting a night's rest and competing in the state championship. The team ran two miles, with Jeremy Detterer taking the lead at 13 minutes 48...

  • Lady Tigers are conference champs

    Liz Wood|Oct 21, 2015

It is no secret that the Encampment Lady Tigers (5-0 conference19-1 overall) have a great support group in the town of Encampment. It should be no surprise when the boys lined up to have their chests painted with letters to spell out Tiger's Den in the last conference game of the season to show their support. It worked. The Lady Tigers went on to a win in three sets (25-17, 25-19, 25-23) with their most competitive county and conference foe, the Little Snake River Valley (LSRV) Lady Rattlers (2-...

  • J.H. Lady Tigers bring back the trophy

    Liz Wood|Oct 21, 2015

During their final practice before the tournament Saturday, the Encampment Lady Tigers junior high school volleyball team started saying "Bring it Back." They would huddle with the trophy in the middle and say "Bring it Back," according to head coach Sammy Baysinger. "It set the tone for the tournament," Baysinger said. Going in ranked third, the girls knew they would have to work hard to bring the trophy back. Encampment had a nearly flawless record last year when they brought the trophy home f...

  • Tigers take Wind River tourney

    Liz Wood|Oct 14, 2015

The Encampment Lady Tigers came home with the first place trophy in the Wind River Tournament Saturday night, but they are still looking to improve their game. That makes head coach Robin O'Leary very happy. "Coach Catron and I discussed what we could improve on and when we were coming home on the bus, the girls were saying 'Hey coach, we need to work on this'," O'Leary said. To the coach, that means her players are not settling, even though they are ranked No. 1 in their conference and No. 2...

  • Kirsten has the floor

    Liz Wood|Oct 14, 2015

Jason Campbell told the audience at the dedication of the Kirsten Campbell Court that he was pretty sure his sister was not with them in spirit Oct. 7, as the Chicago Cubs were playing the Pittsburgh Pirates. "She is in Pittsburgh with a Budweiser at a Cubs game," Jason said. Jason was just as sure that his sister was present when his daughters were playing volleyball on the court. Oct. 7 was an emotional roller coaster for the Campbell family – as two dedications were performed to c...

  • Breast cancer & fire prevention

    Liz Wood|Oct 7, 2015

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It is also Fire Protection Week. On Wednesday, The Kirsten Campbell Court will be dedicated. I mention all of these, because each one has had an impact on my life, indirectly, but still an impact. Shortly after I moved to Saratoga, my maternal grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer. She cried when she told me. I remember that moment vividly and probably will for the rest of my life. I began self-examinations and months later, something was...

  • Tigers take three

    Liz Wood|Oct 7, 2015

The Encampment Lady Tigers (3-0, 14-1) had a tough schedule last week, but they did not let that deter them from winning three matches on Sept. 29, Oct. 1 and 3. The first two matches were against non-conference foes, with Saturdays game against Cokeville (0-2, 9-10 scores missing), who is in the 1A Southwest conference with Encampment. The win against Cokeville was sweet, since the last time the teams played each other was at state, where Cokeville went on to take the state championship for...

  • Erickson swings into sixth

    Liz Wood|Sep 30, 2015

Fast greens and a tough course in Wright kept the Saratoga Panthers from placing in the top three at state last weekend. Head coach Jared Mason is pretty happy with how the season went. The boys may have not won a trophy, but the coach heard plenty of compliments on how considerate and polite the Saratoga team was. “Coaches came up to me and said they enjoyed scoring the boys because they were so polite,” Mason said. Guy Erickson finished in a three-way tie for sixth place and qualified for all...

The Silver Spur Ranches hosted a firearms training event in August that attracted around 100 participants over a period of seven days. John Russo has been coming to Silver Spur Ranches for many years. He writes for a gun magazine, FMG Publications. Manufacturers have contracts with Silver Spur Ranches to test new rifles, and the writers come up to test and write about the new rifles. "That is how I got to know Dave (Sturm) and Silver Spur Ranches," Russo said. Russo is a firearms police trainer...

Despite the double header, the Lady Tigers were calm, cool and collective during the matches against their opponents. In Rock River, the Lady Tigers...

    Liz Wood|Sep 23, 2015

The Saratoga Panther Golf team had their best scores yet on Saturday in Lusk, which could mean they have a chance at a trophy at state this week. Guy Erickson finished sixth, with the team finishing in third with a score of 853. Saratoga competed against six other teams. Head coach Jared Mason said Friday was miserable on the course; with the cold and wind, the players did not do well. They made up for it Saturday. The weather improved and so did the scores. “Saturday was their best round of the...

    Liz Wood|Sep 16, 2015

On Sept. 9, Saratoga Elementary School (SES) students dressed up to celebrate International Literacy Day with a book/swap drive. The students were encouraged to dress up in their very favorite book character. The event is part of an annual effort to raise awareness of the importance of improving child and adult literacy rates around the world, a press release provided by the school said. The Panthers finished with a fourth place finish at Wright with a team score of 404. Mason said the team competed against several different 1A/2A schools that will be at the state...

The Encampment Lady Tigers (8-1, 2-0) came home with a first place trophy after dominating the Hanna Tournament this weekend. The weekend started with a win against conference rival Little Snake River Valley (LSRV) Rattlers, the only team to beat the Lady Tigers at the Saratoga Pool Play last month. The Lady Tigers traveled to Baggs to play Friday night before traveling to Hanna for the tournament. The Tigers have been winning matches since, and Friday night was a big coup for them. They now sta...

  • Time flies

    Liz Wood|Sep 9, 2015

If you ever wonder what the children in the Platte Valley are up to - all you have to do is look at the sports page and this week’s fair edition. While the reporters were interviewing fair participants who did exceptionally well this year, I was typing fair results. Our staff spent the first week in August covering the fair. We can’t make every event, unless of course, we camp out in Rawlins like the rest of the county. But, we also have things to cover in Saratoga and the Platte Valley, lik...
