Pheasant hunters will be pleased to learn there are plenty of pheasants and several places to hunt them in southeast Wyoming for the 2015 season. “Pheasant stocking for the 2015 season will be similar to what we did last year,” said Ben Milner, coordinator at Downar Bird Farm. “We should have around 16,000 birds to release this year so it should be a pretty good year for pheasant hunters.” As in years past, pheasants will be released each day at the Springer/Bump Sullivan Wildlife Habitat Management Area (WHMA) during the Springer Special Pheas...

  • Stuff I failed to learn early

    Keith McLendon|Oct 21, 2015

Did you know you aren’t supposed to actually wash pots and pans? At least not the way I always have you’re not. It turns out that good cookware should be wiped clean shortly after the vessel cools. If you try to clean it while it’s still hot your run the risk of warping the pan in question. Pre-soaking is okay for short periods. If you soak your stainless-steel pots the way I have you will eventually find that the metal used to join the pot section to the handle is not stainless steel but rathe...

  • Getting your Greenery Winter-Ready

    Abby Perry|Oct 21, 2015

This time of year the air is beginning to cool and pumpkin spice flavoring is hitting the shelves. It’s time to think about how to give your yard and garden the care they need to get through the winter months. It is important to water trees and shrubs throughout the winter months, especially if there isn’t good snow cover. Water on days with little to no wind when temps are above 40 degrees and when the ground is not frozen. The combination of these circumstances probably equates to about once a month. Winter watering is important for soil moi...

  • Reader suggests ideas for Saratoga zoo

    Oct 21, 2015

Editor: To solve all four current Town problems, I suggest that the Town Board Revive the long established Town of Saratoga Wyoming Wild Animal Zoo and reappoint a new Zoo Keeper. For the recipients who have forgotten, our former Zoo Keeper, Chuck Bartlett, has resigned. The “Benny Walters” fenced field, (also known as the old Saratoga Baseball Field and Zoo), was full of “Whistle Pigs” and also home to our “Resident Deer”, Coyotes, Eagles and other native wildlife, including Saratoga kids. For many years, as the Whistle Pigs population...

  • An eagle nest for eagle status

    Madeline Weiss|Oct 21, 2015

Encampment sophomore Cody Cor began working on his Eagle Scout project in July. The artificial nest for a golden eagle, a wooden box roughly four foot by four foot, took him about two weeks to build. Cor's nest was not his first choice for an Eagle Scout project-originally, the 15-year-old wanted to build a guzzler for wildlife until he learned of the Bureau of Land Management's (BLM) need for an artificial eagle nest off Hwy 789. Cor's project required permitting and working with the system in...

Popular books may be bought at the Saratoga Elementary School (SES) Scholastic Book Fair, and the profits will be returned to the SES library for projects and books, according to Addie Fletcher, library aide. If they reach their goal of approximately $2,000, Fletcher said, they will be able to keep 50 percent of the profits otherwise, they receive a credit for 25 percent of the profit that may be used for Scholastic books. "That's how I fund things throughout the year," Fletcher said. Some...

    Erik Gantt|Oct 21, 2015

The Elk Mountain Museum, the newest in Carbon County, raised $1,347 at the silent auction they held last week. This should help the museum improve their space and deal with additional collections over the next year. The fundraiser was attended by several local residents, including mayor Morgan Irene. Most of the participants signed bids on auction items in the week prior to Wednesday's event held at the Elk Mountain Senior Center. Items up for bid included oil paintings, quilts, a crossbow,...

There really is no better gift than that," Kelsey Jones, 22-year-old University of Wyoming (UW) student and Saratoga native, said about her time volunteering in the Dominican Republic village of Los Francos. Los Francos is in the southern part of the Dominican Republic near the city of San Cristobal. Madeline Weiss|Oct 21, 2015

The Saratoga Lady Panthers (3-3, 11-8 overall) could enter regionals in second place, according to head coach Shayley Love, providing they do well in the big conference matches this upcoming weekend. "That would be a huge advantage for us." The netters will face Southeast (4-2, 15-5 overall) once more on Friday, after suffering a four-set loss to the Cyclones last Saturday (26-24, 7-25, 13-25, 14-25). • Lady Tigers are conference champs

    Liz Wood|Oct 21, 2015

It is no secret that the Encampment Lady Tigers (5-0 conference19-1 overall) have a great support group in the town of Encampment. It should be no surprise when the boys lined up to have their chests painted with letters to spell out Tiger's Den in the last conference game of the season to show their support. It worked. The Lady Tigers went on to a win in three sets (25-17, 25-19, 25-23) with their most competitive county and conference foe, the Little Snake River Valley (LSRV) Lady Rattlers (2-...

During their final practice before the tournament Saturday, the Encampment Lady Tigers junior high school volleyball team started saying "Bring it Back." They would huddle with the trophy in the middle and say "Bring it Back," according to head coach Sammy Baysinger. "It set the tone for the tournament," Baysinger said. Going in ranked third, the girls knew they would have to work hard to bring the trophy back. Encampment had a nearly flawless record last year when they brought the trophy home f...
