Zeiger resigns

Saratoga mayor leaves in fourth term

Less than two years after officially taking office for his fourth term, John Zeiger has resigned from his position as mayor of Saratoga “effective immediately”. In a post made on social media late Monday night, Zeiger cited familial reasons—the upcoming birth of his grandson—as his reason for resigning.

The post announcing his resignation comes after multiple vague posts about an upcoming decision. At the August 4 meeting of the Saratoga Town Council, Zeiger had appointed Councilmember Bob Keel as mayor pro-tem, a position previously held by the late Councilmember Steve Wilcoxson.

According to Wyoming State Statute 15-1-107(d), a vacancy in the office of mayor shall only be filled by the governing body.

Zeiger had originally been elected mayor in the 2004 election and was re-elected in 2006 and 2010. After losing in the 2014 Primary Election, Zeiger held a write-in campaign in 2018 and eventually beat-out incumbent mayor Ed Glode.

The Saratoga Sun will have more information at www.saratogasun.com and in the August 26 edition.

*UPDATE* After formally accepting Zeiger's resignation letter, the remaining members of the council engaged in, at times, heated discussion on how best to fill the now vacant position. Ultimately, the council unanimously agreed to table filling the vacant position of mayor until the meeting on September 1.
