Council honors fallen member

Saratoga council chambers named after Steve Wilcoxson following unanimous vote

When the members of the Saratoga Town Council will convene for their next meeting, it will be in the renamed Steve Wilcoxson Town Council Chambers. On July 7, the council unanimously approved Resolution 2020-08, renaming the council chambers in honor of the late Steve Wilcoxson.

Wilcoxson passed away on May 29 in a boating accident on the North Platte River. At the time of his passing, he was serving on the Saratoga Town Council. Elected in 2016 following a write-in campaign during the general election, Wilcoxson had filed for re-election for the 2020 Primary Election before his passing.

Before his most recent term on the Town of Saratoga’s governing body, Wilcoxson had been elected in 2002. While he ran for re-election in 2006, he ultimately lost his spot when Kassey Bensen (Westring) and Ed Glode were elected to the council. Wilcoxson ran again in 2010 and was elected. He ran for re-election in 2014 but the two seats were filled by Will Faust and Richard Raymer.

Along with his time on the council, Wilcoxson was active with the Angus England American Legion Post 54 and served as Commander at the time of his death. Prior to his passing, Wilcoxson had also been very vocal in his support for Tyler Pickett Memorial Park.

Following the unanimous passage of the resolution, Mayor John Zeiger stated that he had been in conversation with the American Legion.

“I kind of visited with the American Legion, hoping that when his sons get up here for the memorial that we can get them to come in and just do a little ceremony as well,” said Zeiger.

The next meeting of the Saratoga Town Council will be at 6 p.m. on July 21 at the Saratoga Town Hall.
