Election filings closing Friday

Filing for town, county and state offices will close on May 29

Election filing for town, county and state offices has been open since May 14 and will close May 29. Up for grabs are multiple town council seats, unexpired mayoral terms and county commissioners seats. Additionally, House District 47 incumbent Jerry Paxton will face yet another primary challenger this year.

Encampment Town Council

In Encampment, two council seats are up for election which are currently held by Bill Craig and Kim Loftice. As of press time, Bill Craig is the only candidate to have filed to run for office.

Riverside Town Council

Just down the road in Riverside, two council seats have just one candidate at the moment; Mark Helwick. In speaking with Riverside Town Clerk Jan Cook, she told the Saratoga Sun that people in the town of 50 don’t often file. In the past, many candidates have, in fact, been write-in candidates.

Saratoga Town Council

In Saratoga, two council seats currently have three candidates. Incumbent Steve Wilcoxson has filed to run for reelection to keep his seat on the Saratoga Town Council. Meanwhile, Tasha Worthington and Michael Cooley have each submitted their applications to run for council.

Hanna Town Council

Over in Hanna, Jason Nordquist has filed to run for town council and is the only candidate as of press time for two seats that are up for election this year.

Elk Mountain Town Council

Elk Mountain has, as of press time, two candidates for two seats; Angie Hobbs and Tammy Page.

Medicine Bow Town Council

The Town of Medicine Bow has the most seats up for election this year with an unexpired mayoral term, an unexpired council term and two full terms for council. As of press time, however, nobody has filed to run for any of these positions.

Carbon County Commissioners

On the county level, three seats are up for election in 2020. Commissioners John Espy and Sue Jones have both filed to run for reelection to those seats leaving one seat vacant, which is currently held by Byron Barkhurst. Barkhurst ran in 2018 to fill an unexpired two year term.

House District 47

House District 47, the bulk of which encomposses most of Carbon County except for Rawlins, will see incumbent Jerry Paxton run to keep his place at the legislature. While in 2018 he had a challenger in the form of Julie McCallister of Rock River, this election he will be facing a challenge from Saratoga resident Joey Correnti IV.

With the deadline for filing coming up fast, those who wish to run for town, county or state seats are running out of time. Following the final filing date, a complete list of candidates for all open seats will be available on the Carbon County government website, carbonwy.com, and on the Secretary of State’s website, sos.wyo.gov.

Look for the Saratoga Sun’s primary election section in August and the general election section in October for additional information and details prior to marking the ballots.
