Ryan fire crosses into Carbon County

Valley residents were witness to a huge pillar of smoke rising from beyond Battle Pass on Sunday as the newly begun Ryan Fire grew to consume 1,832 acres. The fire, which was reported late Saturday night, began in Jackson County, Colo. in the “extreme northern tip of the Mount Zerkel Wilderness, Routt National Forest” according to a press release from United States Forest Service media contact Aaron Voos.

Since being reported, the fire moved towards the northeast and crossed the Colorado/Wyoming border into southern Carbon County. According to the press release, initial efforts were focused on suppression with the help of both helicopters and fire crews. As the high winds on Sunday caused the fire to grow, however, efforts were refocused on the evacuation of hunters and campers in the area.

In Wyoming, elk area 13 and deer area 81 are affected due to the fire and the closure area implemented by the USFS of Forest Roads 496 and 404 as well as the area around Blackhall Mountain.

“Smoke from the Ryan Fire was widely visible on Sunday from locations throughout northern Colorado and southern Wyoming,” stated the press release. “The fire origin is approximately 20 miles northwest of Walden, Colo., three miles southeast of Hog Park guard Station, two miles south of the state line and two miles west of Buffalo Ridge Trailhead.”

At this time there is no containment of the Ryan Fire and no structures have been reported lost nor have any injuries been reported. For more information on the Ryan Fire as well as updates provided by the USFS, follow @FS_MBRTB on Twitter or go to: https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/6210.
