Tigers take strides

The Tigers of Encampment High School roared out of vacation Friday to turn in some strong times and distances at the Green River Invitational.

The Lady Tigers did particularly well at the meet. Senior McKenzie Powell took second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:02.81, and secured third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 28.70 seconds.

Up-and-coming Encampment athlete Hailey Barkhurst earned second in the discus throw with a distance of 109’5,” and lofted the shotput 34’3,” good for fifth place in Green River. Cheyanne Jordan followed Powell’s discus performance with a 91’3” throw, taking eighth place for her team.

The Gentleman Tigers also made a strong showing, particularly Reid Schroeder, a freshman who has already distinguished himself at the school with his strong athletic performances. Schroeder completed the 1600-meter run in 4.58.45 snagging first place at the meet.

Jarom Herring—also a freshman—also competed in the 1600-meter run and took third with a time of 5:09.5.

Earlier in the season, Encampment coach Kegan Willford told the Sun that while most of his team is comprised of young underclassmen, the performance he is seeing from those athletes leaves him hopeful for the future, as many of his up-and-comers have a long time left to improve even further.

Though it’s hard to see how an athlete might improve on a first place finish over the next three years, if these results are any indication, Encampment fans should brace themselves for future wins.

Encampment’s next scheduled meet is the Burt Willford Invite, which will be held at Saratoga High School track at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, weather permitting.
