Colorado Grand tours Encampment

More than 100 high-end classic cars are scheduled for a pit stop at the Grand Encampment Museum (GEM) Wednesday.

The 27th Annual Colorado Grand, a tour of classic sports cars that winds its way through the mountains of Colorado and into Wyoming this year, will stop in the Valley for only the second time. Encampment and the GEM will provide a mid-day break for the drivers as the head from North Park, Colo. eventually driving over Battle Pass and back in to Colorado.

The charitable arm of the event provides an $8,000 scholarship to one high school student in each town they stop in for lunch. This means one lucky Encampment student will have some extra funds for college.

Since 1989 the Colorado Grand has contributed over $4.5 million to local and state level charities in Colorado. Now some of those donations will end up on the north side of the state line.

The list of cars looks like a classic sports car fanatics version of heaven. Of the 133 cars listed in the event route book, there are Shelby Cobras, Aston Martins, Allards, Porsches, Maseratis, Jaguars, MGs, Alfa-Romeos, Lancias, Bentleys and Ferraris. Mercedes-Benz is one of the main sponsors for the event and provides several museum quality cars from their classic centers in Germany and California.

The Colorado Grand will be at the GEM from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. today. Cars will be staged in the fields southeast of the museum buildings, where the rendezvous is held.
