$3.6 trillion investment needed to revive nation's infrastructure

The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) released its annual “report card” for America’s infrastructure and grades were less than adequate this year.

Town Engineer Chuck Bartlett shared the report with the Saratoga/Carbon County Impact Joint Power Board last month.

ASCE rated 16 different infrastructure categories ranging from aviation to wastewater with classifications for bridges, drinking water, schools and transit among others. Using a grading scale from “A+” to “F”, the cumulative G.P.A. came to “D+”.

The ASCE rated each category on eight different criteria including capacity, condition, funding, future need, operation and maintenance, public safety, resilience and innovation. They said that since 1998, grades for American infrastructure is averaging only D’s.

Wyoming’s infrastructure grades are low too. The ASCE concluded that 13.7 percent of bridges in Wyoming are structurally deficient. Wyoming schools also have an estimated $361 million dollars in infrastructure needs.

The ASCE says there needs to be a $3.6 trillion investment to restore American infrastructure to an adequate operating level. For more information on infrastructure grades, visit http://www.infrastructurereportcard.org/a/#p/home.
