  • Green Mountain heads to commissioners

    Kaitlyn Campbell|Aug 4, 2021

While the Planned Unit Development (PUD) for Green Mountain by Brush Creek Ranch (BCR) has faced much controversy, it successfully moved to the next stage of approval during a special meeting by Carbon County Planning Commission on July 26. The PUD will be sent to the Board of Carbon County Commissioners (BOCC) for review and potential approval. The planning commission staff created a series of amendments for the PUD guide after the July 12 public hearing. Some amendments were minor changes to...

  • Life first, property second

    Joshua Wood|Aug 4, 2021

In the past two years, Saratoga has experienced three significant gas events which have required the presence of emergency responders. At the July 20 meeting of the Saratoga Town Council, representatives from Black Hills Energy were in attendance to explain their policy regarding emergency gas events. The most recent one was a gas meter strike in June of this year, which resulted in a shelter-in-place notification through Carbon County’s AlertSense program. In November 2019, two gas leaks result...

  • My vision of revision

    Mike Armstrong|Aug 4, 2021

Recently I was listening to a person I respect on many fronts, about how there are those in power trying to push revisionism of history. To me, southern boy and Virginian born guy that I am, I don’t think there is a revisionism movement, just an effort to put the truth about how our country developed in perspective. No person who fought on the South’s side in the Civil War should be considered a hero. It wasn’t always this way for me. 4th grade had me going to school in Arlington, Virgi...

  • Letter to the Editor

    Aug 4, 2021

Dear Editor, This letter is to inform the town of Riverside that, as of July 30, 2021, I will no longer serve on the town council as a council member. My resignation is due to several things that have been done that I did not agree with and, unfortunately, I anticipate procedures concerning legal obligations will not change. As a write-in, I agreed to serve the people of Riverside. The following statements highlight some of the things that steered my resignation. I feel that the way some of the town council members read and/or interpret the...

  • WYDOT reveals construction schedule

    Mike Armstrong|Aug 4, 2021

The Carbon County Council of Governments (CCCOG) met at 6:30 p.m. on July 21 at the Baggs Community Recreation Center. Encampment and Riverside did not have representatives attending. Jim Espy, who is a transportation commissioner who represents Commission District 2, serving Albany, Carbon and Sweetwater counties was present as was Larry S. Hicks who is a member of the Wyoming State Senate, representing District 11. The agenda was amended to allow time for Wyoming Department of Transportation...

  • Hanging up the antlers

    Joshua Wood|Aug 4, 2021

For 49 hunting seasons, Merrill Meat Company north of Encampment has accepted wild game from out-of-state and local hunters. This season, what would have been its 50th, that will no longer be the case. No elk, no deer, no antelope. A difficult decision, according to second generation owner Cade Merrill, because his parents, Bob and Judy Merrill, started the processing business during the hunting season of 1971. In fact, it was wild game processing that helped establish and grow the family...

  • Here you are family

    Joshua Wood|Aug 4, 2021

On the weekend of July 9, it may have looked like a small town had sprung up at Bottle Creek Campground south of Encampment. A variety of campers and tents had been set up for an extended weekend stay and were joined by several large tents. For the 75th year in a row, the United States Forest Service campground served as the home of the Wyoming Rancher's Family Camp. Emphasis on family. On a warm, sunny-and slightly smokey-Saturday morning the Miller family is hard at work getting lunch ready...

  • A crown for Wyoming

    Joshua Wood|Aug 4, 2021

When one thinks of "The West" and particularly Wyoming, a number of images come to mind. Bucking broncos, hard working cowboys, majestic mountain ranges and clear blue skies. The most iconic of all these images, however, is the buffalo. If the lion is the "King of the Jungle", then the buffalo was the "King of the Prairie". Larger than life, with a massive head and impressive horns, one could easily sense an air of royalty. There is only one place, however, where one can find a Crowned Buffalo....

  • Best of the Best

    Kaitlyn Campbell|Aug 4, 2021

The crowd gathered at the Bear Trap Cafe and Bar on July 24 was unusual, but not surprising given the event. Midget wrestling returned to Riverside for a Saturday night, giving the crowd a chance to see the wrestlers duke it out. The event was first introduced to Riverside in 2018, with MicroMania performing last year's show. This year's show by MicroMania proved to be popular, having sold over 100 tickets before the night even began. Laughter roared as jokes and insults were thrown, a...

  • Where there's a Wille ...

    Mike Armstrong|Aug 4, 2021

Ann and Dale Wille were selected to be the Grand Marshals of the Carbon County Fair this year. This isn't the first time a Grand Marshal has been selected in Little Snake River Valley in recent years. "My mother had the honor about five or six years ago," Dale said. Ann is presently teaching at Little Snake River Valley School (LSRV) and is also its athletic director. She has been teaching there for 35 years. Dale retired last year after 33 years as the VoAg and FFA advisor at the same school....

  • A little thrifty in Hanna

    Mike Armstrong|Aug 4, 2021

There is another thrift store business that has established itself in Hanna. It is located in the St. Joseph's Catholic Church in the basement. It is named the Hanna Thrift Store. The Catholic church has had thrift shops in its basement years prior, and often was run by volunteers of the church. The volunteer system was replaced by an owner who ran the store and its contents as a non-profit. This tenant left and Marcia Beals, and San XXXX decided to open a thrift store again to be non-profit...
