    Joshua Wood, Stevenson Newspapers|Jun 29, 2023

The Town of Saratoga will once-again begin the search for a town clerk following the resignation of Marie Christen on June 20. Christen, who struggled at times to hold back tears, read her own resignation letter near the end of the meeting. “I want to express my gratitude for the opportunities I have had while working here. I have learned an immense amount and appreciate the support provided by my co-workers and the council,” said Marie. “I am committed to ensure a smooth transition and will...

David Martin, Special to the Sun|Jun 29, 2023

Schools in Carbon County School District No. 2 (CCSD2) will soon have a resource officer following recent approval of an agreement by the Board of Carbon County Commissioners (BOCCC). The commissioners approved the Memorandum of Understanding with CCSD2 during their June 20 meeting. The officer will cover six of the seven schools throughout the district, as the school in Elk Mountain doesn’t have any students enrolled. The SRO will be provided by the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office in an agreement like one already in place between Carbon Cou...

  • Good Help is Hard to Find

Kaitlyn Campbell, Special to the Sun|Jun 29, 2023

This summer, it's been common to see businesses throughout town closed multiple days of the week. Though staffing has always been an issue for Saratoga businesses, recent developments have exacerbated the difficulty in finding employees. "In our 13 years of having businesses in Saratoga we've always had issues with staffing," said Cassie Orduno. She and her husband own Bella's Bistro, Saratoga Sandwich Company and SunnyCup. According to Orduno, the past couple years have made it more difficult....

  • Commissioners talk fire plan, arson dog

David Martin, Special to the Sun|Jun 29, 2023

The Carbon County Commissioners approved the annual wildland fire management plan last week, allowing the county’s fire department to cooperate with other agencies in the area when responding to wildland fires. Fire Warden John Rutherford said the agreement is between federal, state and county firefighting agencies. “It’s how we conduct business,” he said. The agreement is beneficial to Carbon County as it stipulates that each agency absorbs its own costs while fighting a fire. While the county has several trucks, it doesn’t have the aerial re...

  • Things I didn't know till I got old-er

    Virginia Parker|Jun 29, 2023

I love learning new things and watching videos about life hacks. It’s fun to see something as simple as fillinga long neck glass bottle with water, turning it up side down and sticking it in your potted plant for a self-waterer, and wondering why you never thought about doing that? Getting older has its perks. You get good at using what you’ve learned, it’s called crystalized intelligence. Also, it turns out you might not be a grumpy old man or woman, after all. In your 60s you’re likely...

  • Greetings to my close, personal friends

    Gary Honodel|Jun 29, 2023

Hello to all the subscribers, readers and advertisers of the Saratoga Sun. My name is Gary Honodel and I was recently appointed to be the publisher of this great newspaper. It is quite an honor. Virginia Parker will be staying on at the Sun. I'll let her address this in her own words, but will say that while she did want to achieve a more flexible schedule, she is also dedicated to our local paper. I sort of think of her as the Air Boss, a Navy carrier position that might not be flying the plane...

  • Blue Star Memorial Monument placed at Grand Encampment Museum

    Virginia Parker|Jun 29, 2023

On June 24, Encampment became the 12th location in the state of Wyoming to host a Blue Star Memorial Marker. In doing so, the Encampment Dirt Diggers Club continued a tradition which has carried on since 1945. As representatives of VFW 6125 presented the Colors to mark the beginning of the dedication ceremony for the Blue Star Memorial Marker, the choir sang The Star Spangled Banner. The Encampment Community Choir sang a moving rendition of "Salute to the Armed Forces" bringing servicemen and...
