Saratoga American Legion Baseball Finishes 3rd in Conference

A report on the 2023 season for the Post 54 Cutthroats summary & photo from Coach Casey Jones

In a small town there is the opportunity for each kid to participate in a lot of different activities, some offered by the school system and some from outside organizations. With everything that is going on in Saratoga for the youth, there has definitely been a lull in what most will still call “America’s Sport”... baseball! Over the past few years there has been a resurgence in community baseball for younger kids (ages 5-12) to get exposed to the game and play in a local league vs. each other and that is a good thing. So riding the momentum of youth baseball, so recently a move was made to add a competitive American Legion baseball team for kids 13-15 years old... and it has worked!

In the winter of ’21-’22 Saratoga applied and was added to the Wyoming’s Southeast Conference of American Legion baseball. This Conference consists of Cheyenne, Laramie, Wheatland and Torrington (and Casper in 2022). To compete in the conference each team must play double headers against each other, one set of games at home and one set on the road, before the second weekend in July. The top 2 teams in each Conference then meet for a state tournament held at alternating sites in Wyoming.

This season the Cutthroats, with one year of experience and a little older team, finished 3rd in the conference ahead of Torrington and Wheatland! Next season the Cutthroats are really looking forward to having a predominantly 15 year old team like the rest of the conference, and making a run at qualifying for state.

There are so many people behind the scenes working hard to make this happen and it is really hard to list them all... Also knowing that folks who are helping are not doing it for themselves or to be recognized, but they are doing it for the youth of Saratoga to have the opportunity to experience the great sport of baseball! The one thing that needs to be mentioned is the Woods family offering their land for the field/s for baseball to even have a chance of happening in Saratoga. Thank you to all!
