Details emerge on arrest of local man

Substance found in Saratoga restaurant connected to overdose in Hanna

More details have emerged regarding the arrest of a local man in connection with the overdose deaths of a Saratoga couple on February 4.

Max Schneider, 23, is facing charges on one count of delivery of a controlled substance (fentanyl) and two counts of involuntary manslaughter for the deaths of Richard Heap and Megan Cassidee Wingo. Schneider was arrested on February 17 following an initial investigation by the Carbon County Sheriff's Office (CCSO) and Wyoming Department of Criminal Investigation (DCI). He was arraigned in Carbon County Circuit Court on February 21.

Schneider has pleaded not guilty to the charges and is currently being held at the Carbon County Detention Center on a $150,000 cash-only bond. He is innocent until proven guilty.

According to court documents, Schneider allegedly found a bag containing what he believed to be cocaine in the bathroom of the restaurant he managed on February 3. Witnesses told investigators the bag, which Schneider allegedly showed to other employees, had aliens printed on it. The description allegedly matched the bag,, which was reportedly given to Wingo by Schneider. found at the home of Heap and Wingo the next day.

A test of the substance on February 4 at the scene gave a presumptive positive result for Fentanyl. A toxicology report on Wingo later confirmed the substance to be Fentanyl, with a blood sample showing she had more than 11 times the lethal dose in her system. When law enforcement responded to the scene, according to court documents, they saw a tray with white powder residue and a rolled up paper currency leading investigators to believe the substance to have been used like cocaine.

The bag and the substance found by Schneider has been connected to a third overdose death in Hanna on February 13. The person-who has not been identified-was found with a white powder which also gave a presumptive positive result for Fentanyl when tested. According to court documents, a roommate of the overdose victim told investigators the person had a relapse on February 3. The individual reportedly had come out of a restaurant bathroom in Saratoga while under the influence of a controlled substance.

The individual allegedly told his roommates he had left the substance in the restaurant bathroom. Text messages between the person in Hanna and his source for the Fentanyl-who has not been identified- also indicated he had lost the bag in the restaurant bathroom, according to court documents.

Results of the investigation indicate it appeared Schneider was unaware of the true identity or the source of the substance which he gave to Heap and Wingo.
