Carbon County Sheriff's office bridging the gap

New school resource officer for CCSD No. 1 sworn in

In the past, school resource officers were typically pulled from the local police department.

In a historical move, the Board of Carbon County Commissioners approved a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Carbon County Sheriff's Office and Carbon County School District No. 1, establishing a full-time District One School Resource Officer for the Sheriff's Office.

Deputy Joel Robertson, who was worn in Monday, February 28, will become the first School Resource Officer in the history of the Carbon County Sheriff's Office.

As a District One School Resource Officer, Deputy Robertson will work with the Rawlins High School and the Little Snake River Valley School. Deputy Robertson already has experience working as a School Resource Officer for District One, making the transition for both the Sheriff's office and the School District a smooth one.

A School Resource Officer is the bridge between law enforcement and our school system, providing a safe and secure environment for our students and staff. In addition, School Resource Officers provide education programming and outreach opportunities for our students. The Sheriff's Office School Resource Officer will work cooperatively with school staff, students, and parents to ensure a safe and effective program.

One of the biggest concerns heard by Sheriff Alex Bakken during his campaign was the Sheriff's office does not do enough in the schools. Acquiring and implementing a quality School Resource Officer Program is a massive step in establishing our commitment to school safety.

Bakken said, "I can't thank the Board of Carbon County Commissioners, Superintendent Mike Hamel, and the District One school board enough for their assistance in making this goal a reality.”

During a community roundtable in Saratoga on February 23, Bakken said he would be pursuing a similar position for Carbon County School District No. 2
