Wrestling teams from across the state hit the mats in Hanna

Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) High School hosted the Carbon Tournament with Big Piney, Dubois, Glenrock, HEM, Lusk, Saratoga, Wyoming Indian participating. Big Piney won with 136.5 team points and five champions. Saratoga and Glenrock took 2nd and 3rd.

The Miners did have a champion in girls wrestling with McKaylee Widdison winning the 105 weight class. Her teammate Alaina McNees came in 2nd in the 115 division.

Coach Robert Riddle was happy with his wrestlers' performances although his team has shrunk.

"We are down to five wrestlers," Riddle said. "That is all we have left as the season ends."

Riddle said this event was a good chance for the team to see many of the wrestlers who would be at regionals.

"Watching many of these kids gave us an idea of what we need to do to step up our game a little bit," Riddle said. "We have to work on our intensity and also our focus and concentration. I see us doing well at regionals and I hope all three boys will qualify for state."

Riddle said Jared Nelsen has potential to make it.

"We need to pump him up a little bit to get him qualified for state," Riddle said. "Anthony (Solaas) should be there and Sam (Ramirez) will probably be in the mix."

Nelsen did not win a match in the Carbon Tournament, Solaas took 3rd in the 106 weight class and Ramirez also placed 3rd in the 145 pound category.

Riddle said going down to five wrestlers has hurt practices.

"Drills are fine, as are exercises," Riddle said. "But not having partners to wrestle with in practice does take its toll."

Still Riddle is hopeful the team will do well going to regionals.
