Celebrating equality

Girls celebrating 50 years of Title IX

The 2023 Senior Lady Tiger athletes created a timeline to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Title IX (Equal Opportunity in Education Act) at Encampment School. The Equal Opportunity in Education Act provided all students, both male and female, the opportunity to participate in all sports and join clubs without discrimination.

In 1972 Title IX was enacted as part of the Education Amendments of that year. It prohibits sex-based discrimination in any school or any other education program that receives funding from the federal government. As part of the Title IX, the Equal Opportunity in Education Act prohibits discrimination against faculty, staff and students, and requires school districts to take action to overcome barriers to students' equal participation. The Equal Opportunity in Education Act (EEOA) addressed the civil rights issues in education, barring states from discriminating against a student based on gender, race, color, or nationality and requiring public schools to provide for students who do not speak English.

It also requires schools to provide students and employees who report sexual harassment and violence, the support and protective measures necessary to safely continue their education or jobs. It also requires schools to investigate reports of sexual misconduct and to hold those found responsible to account.
