Rattlers poison Devils chance

LSRV continues its quest towards another state championship

The Hulett Devils had a brief moment of elation in their game against the Little Snake River Valley (LSRV) Rattler High School football game when they were able to score early in the 1st quarter.

With the Devils first possession, they scored against the Rattlers. That hasn’t happened before this season to LSRV. “They caught us sleeping on a long pass and it got over my players,” Head Coach for the Rattlers, Jack Cobb said. “We woke up after that, and took over the game.”

The joy the Devils had scoring first dissipated quickly as Rattler players Kannadis Peroulis and Hadley Myers carried the ball three times each. Both scored two touchdowns a piece. Peroulis got his two touchdowns from passes by Zane Matheson. Myers got his points by rushing.

Besides the touchdowns, Myers got 6 points from three conversions.

The 1st quarter saw LSRV ahead 45 to 6. It was clear, there was not going to be an upset of the Devils over the Rattlers.

In the 2nd quarter, the Rattlers got 13 more points and the Devils did not add to their score.

Going into the half, LSRV was ahead 58 to 6. Cobb tried to keep the scoring down in the last quarters.

The Rattlers scored seven points in the 3rd quarter and in the last quarter, neither team scored. The final score was 65 to 6.

Bridger Cozzens got a touchdown off an interception. Seth Maxson also got a touchdown from a pass.“The kids did really well once they got going,” Cobb said. “When I put the JV players in, they scored on an interception. I wanted to tell the kids to stop scoring, but it was too late.” Cobb said Hulett was at a disadvantage–being down several players. “They only had about 10 players this game,” Cobb said. “When we played them earlier in the season, they had 14. Hulett did keep their seniors in the whole game and I told my JV players to be tough and take on the seniors.” Cobb said the JV players did fine.

The next team the Rattlers face will be the Encampment Tigers who whipped Kaycee 57 to 0 in their game on Saturday. The Rattlers met the Tigers earlier in the season and LSRV won 78 to 26. Cobb does not expect the Rattlers to win so resoundingly this next game.

“They are good. They are solid and we know they bring a good game to the field,” Cobb said. “Kaban (Pickett) and Quade (Jordan) are strong players. I am sure this team has improved since we saw them a month ago.” Cobb said there is already a rivalry going on and a playoff game intensifies the dynamics. “There is so much on the line for both teams,” Cobb said. “One of us will be going to the state championship game in Laramie and the other team will be going home. Both teams are going to be ready to play, I guarantee you that.”

Cobb is happy to have the home field advantage. “Playing at home will help, but the fact we beat them earlier this year means absolutely nothing,” Cobb said. “At this stage of the season, I am not taking any team lightly and especially not a team like Encampment.”
