Miner track sees results

HEM track and field places well in Rawlins

Mother Nature was kind as far as temperatures went for Friday's Nancy Steinberg Track and Field Invite in Rawlins, but she still tested the athletes with strong wind conditions.

"The conditions were challenging for our kids as they went for times," Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) Miner Head Coach Jackie Jones observed. "But the conditions are the same for every athlete. Weather is almost always a factor at events like this."

Avery Scott came in 2nd in the 100 meter dash with a time of 13.93 seconds and 3rd in the 200 meter dash at 28.37 seconds. She was also on the Sprint Medley Relay which came in 2nd and pre-qualified for state with a time of 4 minutes, 59.52 seconds.

"Avery continues to get herself in the placings, which I think is wonderful," Jones said. "She is doing well this season."

Jones was happy with freshman Justine Widdison placing in the 100 meter hurdles, coming in 5th with a time of 19.37 seconds and 4th in the Long Jump going 14 feet, 2.5 inches. Widdison was also on the Sprint Medley Relay team.

"I thought Justine had a tremendous day," Jones said. "Honestly, I think on a day like Friday, with the windy conditions, the kids had to be ready to compete and I believe all the kids did just that."

Jones was pleased Mackenzie Priest made the finals in shot put going 22 feet, 1 inch. Teammate Hanna Gonzales was right behind her at 21feet, 5 inches.

Rainey Wilson and T'lyssa Solaas placed in the top ten in their events and were on the Sprint Medley Relay, which came in 2nd.

The boys team had Jospeh Borah place 2nd in the shot put event throwing for 41 feet, 7 inches.

"Joseph has been doing well in this event all season," Jones said. "Dylan (Romero) and Cody (Priest) did their best in shot put and discus.

Freshman Jared Nelson came in 4th in the 1600 meter run at 5 minutes, 36.06 seconds.

"I don't think he ran the time he wanted, but for him trucking around four laps in that wind, which all the athletes had to do, I was proud Jared is learning to compete at the high school level," Jones said. "That is a huge positive for Jared."

Anthony Solaas competed in the 100 meter dash and 400 meter dash for the boys team.

Seven schools competed in Rawlins. Encampment, HEM, Kemmer, Little Snake River Valley, Rawlins, Rock River and St. Stephens all participated.

"I think it is a testament to how strong track and field is in Carbon County, because there were some tremendous performances and not all coming from Rawlins which is 3A," Jones said. "Our 1A Carbon County schools really competed. I thought it was a great meet."

The Miners will be headed to Pinedale on April 29 for their next track and field event.
