Kiwanis rink closes

Dear Editor,

Platte Valley Kiwanis would like to thank the community and all those who supported our ice skating rink project this winter!

The ice rink could not have been possible without generous support from American Legion, Bridge Street Bargains, E.J. Glode, Jim and Martha Gray, Carrie Haderly, Lollypops, Rocky Mountain District of Kiwanis, RP Lumber, Sinclair, Saratoga Fire Department, Saratoga Resort and Spa, Saratoga Sun, Shively North, and The Grumpy Italian.

Our goal was to provide an opportunity for children and families to get out and enjoy a wintertime activity. Seeing the smiles on first time skaters faces this winter makes me believe we have met that goal! Not only is skating for the first time a challenge, but so is managing an ice rink.

We made a lot of progress, but unfortunately we didn’t initially have all the correct equipment and as a result the ice rink liner was punctured early in the season. With the fluctuating weather, that resulted in the rink losing water and not being able to maintain sufficient ice.

After nursing the situation along for several weeks, we have decided to close the ice rink for the remainder of the winter. The good news is we have learned a lot and we plan to make some adjustments and bring the ice rink back for the community to enjoy next season!
