Angling for a good time

Mother Mountain Anglers hold annual ice fishing clinic at East Lake

The Mother Mountain Anglers held their annual kid's fishing clinic on January 9th, 2021. The non-profit group promotes the preservation of nature and community through the shared love of fishing.

According to Shannon Fagan, this year had the largest turn out the clinic has seen even though temperatures were in the teens. Fagan speculated that people were excited to spend time outdoors since the COVID pandemic restricted many other activities and kept people cooped up at home.

The clinic is held every year, the week before the Saratoga Ice Fishing Derby, in order to help prepare area children for the event. The Mother Mountain Anglers provided free fishing poles and bait to all participating children. They also furnished huts, to keep fishers out of the wind, hot chocolate and treats.

Game Warden Biff Burton, was there to teach ice safety at the beginning of the ice fishing clinic. Then the children were given the opportunity to catch a fish. The clinic was held on East Lake and was catch and release. Only two fish were wrangled up from the ice, but that did not dampen any spirits. A good time was had by all.
