Covid in Carbon 2

District staff member had no contact with children

A month into the 2020/2021 school year, Carbon County School District No. 2 (CCSD2) has its first confirmed case of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

The announcement of the positive case came from CCSD2 Superintendent Jim Copeland on Friday morning. Using the district eNotes service, Copeland informed parents that a CCSD2 staff member had not been in direct contact with students and had been home since the onset of symptoms.

“The staff member will follow the Carbon County Public Health (CCPH) guidance—and we are awaiting their guidance for the district,” wrote Copeland. “People that have been in direct contact have already been notified. I will keep everyone posted if there are other actions from CCPH, but I plan to be transparent with COVID information as I receive confirmed information.”

This is the first case for CCSD2 since the school year began on August 17. The case in CCSD2 follows an announcement from the Carbon County COVID-19 Incident Management Team’s Facebook page late Wednesday evening that three Rawlins High School students and one individual from Rawlins Middle School had tested positive for the virus.

Additionally, the University of Wyoming has had to repeatedly push back the start of in-person call classes due to students testing positive for COVID-19 following off campus gatherings.

During a meeting of the CCSD2 Board of Trustees on September 21, Copeland did not provide any update in regards to the staff member that had tested positive or about those in direct contact with the individual.

In Carbon County, according to CCPH, there have been 187 confirmed cases of COVID-19 since the pandemic began in March. Of those, according to a situational debrief from Public Information Officer Jacquelin Wells, 166 have recovered and there are currently 19 active cases among local residents. Additionally, Carbon County has had 4,686 COVID-19 tests that have led to either negative or positive results.

Statewide, there have been 4,189 confirmed cases of COVID-19 since the pandemic began and 3,534 of those have recovered. Fremont County has had 595 positive cases, Laramie County has had 494 positive cases, Teton County has had 471 positive cases and Albany County has had 329 positive cases since March.
