Vera Adell 'Wood' McCargar

Vera Adell (Wood) McCargar, age 87, of Saratoga, passed away August 2, 2020 at Hospice of Metro Denver in Denver, Colorado.

She was born January 16,1933 in North Hollywood, California to George and Pearl (Jenkins) Wood and joined two brothers, George and Bill at home. Her childhood was spent on the desert of southern California and at the LeRoy Jenkins Ranch on French Creek.

After graduation from Saratoga High School in 1950, Vera worked for Mountain Bell as a telephone operator in Saratoga, Salt Lake City, Utah; and Denver, Colorado.

She married Bob McCargar in 1955 while he was in the Army and moved to Germany. Their daughters, Gwen and Kathleen, were in born in 1962 and 1963. Together they traveled and lived in many places in the U.S. and around the world.

Upon Bob’s retirement in 1971, the family moved home to Saratoga. Vera worked as a night auditor at the Saratoga Inn as well as owning and running several small business with her husband. She retired as head cook from the Saratoga School lunchroom where she became legendary for her cinnamon rolls. As head cook, she delighted in teaching children about nutrition and introducing them to new or exotic foods.

Though Vera was a three time cancer survivor, she refused to let it stop her from volunteering to work with young children at the school and joyfully watching her grandchildren and great grandchildren grow and thrive. Further, she felt an obligation to mentor other cancer sufferers and survivors in the Valley. She was also a past president of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Vera was predeceased by her parents, brothers and sisters-in-laws: George and Nellie and Bill and Johanna, husband of 60 years SMG Bob McCargar and son-in-law Joseph DiGregorio.

She is survived by daughters Gwen McCargar of Denver, Kathleen Fraser and husband Tracy Fraser of Casper; grandchildren Rob McCargar and wife Randi of Saratoga, Kelly Fraser and Lisa Fraser of Casper; great grand children Kaycee and Samantha McCargar of Saratoga and Isaac Easley of Casper.

A memorial service and celebration of life will be held at the Saratoga Cemetery Pavilion on August 28, 2020 at 11 a.m. with a luncheon to follow at the American Legion Post home.
