Carbon County Sheriff’s Office investigates possible murder, juvenile identified as person of interest

In the early morning of May 11, the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call from a county resident of a suspicious vehicle that resulted in a morbid discovery.

According to a press release from the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office received on Monday afternoon, the sheriff’s department received a call at approximately 6:22 a.m. of a vehicle that was in the roadway with an unresponsive subject in the back seat. The vehicle was located on County Road 215, across from Walcott Service and Towing, approximately 100 feet off of Highway 30.

Wyoming Highway Patrol responded and, upon entering the vehicle, found a male who had suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the chest. The Wyoming Highway Patrol then notified the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office. Following the arrival of deputies from the sheriff’s department, both the Wyoming Department of Criminal Investigation and the Coroner’s Office were contacted. 

In their press release Monday afternoon, the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office identified a juvenile, Marcos Esteban Garza Calderon, as a person of interest in the case. Calderon was described as being 5 feet 6 inches, 130 pounds and having brown eyes and black hair. At the time of the press release, the sheriff’s office considered him to be possibly armed and dangerous.

It was also announced that the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office was working with Nebraska authorities to help identify persons of interest. The sheriff’s office stated that they were seeking information from anyone who may have seen a white Toyota sedan with Nebraska plates.

At approximately 8 p.m. on the same day, the Carbon County Sherrif’s Office was notified that persons of interest were located in Utah and had been taken into custody.

The investigation is ongoing.

In their Tuesday morning press release, the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office extended thanks to the law enforcement agencies involved for their fast response. The sherrif’s office also thanked Carbon County citizens for their assistance.
