Competing in a "wooly" contest

Local contestants compete in district, state and national MIWW contest

Fifteen contestants competed in the Carbon County Make It With Wool (MIWW) district competition held at the Jeffery Center, Rawlins, on Sunday, November 10, 2019. Winners were announced at the end of the fashion show that afternoon.

Winners in the Adult Division (age 25 and over) included Sheryl Hunter, Saratoga, 1st place, modeling black slacks and gray sweater, and Cheryl Munroe, Encampment, 2nd place, modeling a royal blue skirt, top, and vest. Both of these contestants represented the District at the State competition in Casper, December 8-9, where Cheryl Munroe received 1st place and Sheryl Hunter received 3rd place. Cheryl will enter her outfit in the National Adult Judging contest, which will be held the last week of December.

District winners in the Junior Division (age 13-16) included Caleb Lee, Encampment, 1st place, modeling a self-designed camouflage hunting jacket, and Hannah Lee, Encampment, 2nd place, modeling a vintage 1940s navy blue skirt and bolero jacket. Both of these contestants represented the District at the State competition where Caleb received 3rd place and Hannah received Honorable Mention.

District winners in the Preteen Division (age 12 and under) included Bryndal Berger, Saratoga, 1st place, modeling a blue/black sleeveless dress, and Madi Dunning, Encampment, 2nd place, modeling a 1950s pink "poodle" skirt and shawl.

District winners in the Made for Others category included Brooklyn Rusch, Laramie, 1st place Youth Division, modeling a black dress and blue/black plaid jacket made by Lynda Johnson, and Rhen O'Toole, Savery, 2nd place Youth Division, modeling a black tweed reversible vest made by Maeve Lally. Winners in the Made for Others Adult Division included Mandy Palmer, Laramie, 1st place, modeling a black dress and blue/black plaid jacket made by Lynda Johnson, and Deb Lucero, Rawlins, 2nd place, modeling a purple plaid skirt and jacket made by Lynda Johnson.

Contestants in the MIWW competition sew, knit, or crochet and model their outfits, which must be made from at least 60 percent wool fabric or yarn. District competitions are held throughout Wyoming during October and November. Other categories include Senior Division (age 17-24) and Wearable Accessories. Wyoming also sponsors a state-only contest for Wool Handwork and Crafts, which includes Quilts, Afghans, Wall Hangings, Knitted/Crocheted Apparel, etc., made with wool fabric and/or yarn.
