Two down

Miners football crushes first two opponents

The Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) High School varsity football team won their first game of the season resoundingly against St. Stephens 60-13 on Aug. 31. The Miners did even better against Midwest who were ranked number five in the Southeast 1A by keeping the Oilers scoreless on Saturday at Midwest.

The Miners beat the Oilers 64-0.

“Defense has been our focus this year,” Zack Scott, head coach said. “If there was an Achilles heel last year, it was our tackling and we have really worked hard on it.”

Keeping their opponent scoreless, the Miners are succeeding in their focus. He said the players were playing smart also.

“I have some talented and intelligent players doing good things on the field he said. “The McGraw brothers are football junkies and it comes across on the field.”

Scott said he is happy with where the team is at this point.

“We are working hard to improved our weaknesses and seem to be moving in the right direction,” Scott said. “We have many players stepping us this year into leadership roles … Brendon Reeves, Tylor Goodro, Basil Phillips and Devon Grosstick are all playing and contributing at a high level.”

The next schedule game is against Hulett at 1 p.m. on Sept. 15 at Midwest.
