Med Bow VFW post closing, leaves howitzer in hands of Hanna

Rex Rudd, Veteran of Foreign Wars (VFW) member, told the Hanna Town Council, the VFW Post 6680 in Medicine Bow would be closing down due to lack of new members coming on board to replace the members who had departed. This presented a situation with the howitzer that is stationed in Veterans Park near the Hanna Recreation Center. It has been on loan from the Department of Wyoming VFW.

The council met at the Hanna Town Hall at 6 p.m. on April 10. The council approved the agenda, minutes from March 13 and special meeting minutes from March 27. Bills were paid and Ann Calvert, town clerk, said all the water meters that had not been working properly had their problems corrected

After Rudd told the council Post 6680 was closing down, he introduced Trish Peoples, Department of Wyoming VFW Adjunct/Quartermaster. She was there to offer the town the howitzer in Veterans Park and a house owned by the Wyoming VFW. Tony Poulos, mayor, said the town was interested in both, but a decision could not happen before the next town council where the situation could be presented on the agenda.

Peoples said she foresaw no problem with waiting for the town’s council meeting. Rudd said the flags for the Avenue of Flags he has previously done for different military commemorations would be left for the town also. He will do the flags one more time for Memorial Day.

The town council decided to keep their deductible the same at $1,000 for the Wyoming Local Government Pool insurance.

The council approved Resolution 2018-485 to designate May 19 as Kids to the Park Day to be held annually on the third Saturday of May.

“This is actually coming from the state as a day to get kids out and about to fight obesity,” Vivian Gonzales, Hanna Parks and Recreation Director said. “It is about encouraging people to get out and enjoy your environment and it doesn’t matter if it is a town park or a national park.”

Gonzales said she looking at creating an event at the Hanna Recreation Center to support this day.

For King Coal Days, the town council approved Resolution 2018-486 supporting the submission of an application to the Carbon County Visitors Council for a grant in the amount of $4,000.

Gonzales told the council the pool needed maintenance that required the pool to shut down.

“We need to close the pool for repairs and yearly maintenance and upkeep,” Gonzales said. “We are saying it will take a month, but we hope sooner than that.”

She said what takes the longest is to refill, heat, and get chemicals adjusted properly for the tool.

The next scheduled Hanna Town Council meeting will be at 6 p.m. on May 8 at the Hanna Town Hall.
