HEM guidelines for closing
For Northern Carbon County, in the event of serious weather, such as blizzards or other emergencies, Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow Junior/High school follows these guidelines for students in the different communities in the region.
When a change in the regular schedule happens, it will be announced on radio station 99.3 beginning at 6 a.m. The change will also be posted on Schoology app, sent out via Remind and on the HEM School website.
If travel is too severe for travel or for normal operations, the school has three options.
The first is a two hour delay. All schedules start exactly two hours after normal time. This usually happens when the situation looks to be improving. The school monitors the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) closely during this time. It is important for staff and students to continue to be apprised of the day to make sure conditions don't change.
The second option is when all teachers, aides and students report to their local school, if conditions make it impossible to travel out of their community, Elk Mountain and Medicine Bow school kitchens have supplies to provide lunch for the additional students.
The last option and least desired, is the conditions are too treacherous for school in the morning and are unlikely to improve, the day will be cancelled. This day will have to be made up before the end of the year.
Sometimes it isn't easy to go to school in the northern area of Carbon County during winter, but Carbon County School District No. 2 is prepared.
