Lady Panthers ignite season at Burns tourney

After this week’s practice which included mandatory participation in the Jingle Bell Run, the Lady Panthers Basketball squad is heading to Burns this weekend for the first tournament of the year.

Head Coach Scott Bokelman said that the team has a core of experienced players to lead the team from the start. Three returning starters, Meredith Lincoln, Haley Soles and Katie Loose will be joined by Cruz Escobedo who had her fair share of time on the court last season. Bokelman said since those ladies are familiar with the practice drills, inbound plays and structure of the offense and defense. It has helped get the six freshmen on the squad up to speed early on.

Even with the on-court experience, Bokelman said the team has been focusing on fundamentals.

Bokelman said the match-ups in the upcoming tournament will be a bit of a guessing game since many of the teams were heavy on seniors last year and will have a new look. The coach is aware that his team does not have many tall players, but he is confident that their speed and agility will make up for that. He noted that all of the ladies have come to practice with a great work ethic and attitudes to match. Bokelman said that he sees the potential for depth on the team as his younger players get some game time on the court, particularly Shaelee Hamann, Sarah Burton and Alicia Zaragosa. Bokelman added that he feels he has seven pretty solid players right now.

The Lady Panthers tip off against the Moorcroft Lady Wolves at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, followed by a 6 p.m. game against the Shoshone Lady Wranglers. On Saturday tip off is at 4 p.m. for a game against the Lingle-Fort Laramie lady Doggers.
