Five local youth earn Congressional Award

On May 3, 2015, twenty-five young citizens were recognized by the congressional delegation for earning Bronze, Silver and Gold Congressional Awards. Senator John Barrasso, Secretary of State Edward F. Murray III, and State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jillian Balow presented the medals for initiative, service and achievement at the state ceremony held in Laramie.

“By participating in the Congressional Award, I have learned that it is important to have Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely goals (SMART) ... “I learned that every person has the ability to change another person’s life whether the act is big or small. It is important to start with small goals and work your way up to achieve your dreams,” said Noelle Peterson of Encampment, a 2015 Bronze Congressional Award recipient.

Of the twenty-five recipients of the award, Carbon County had five.

From Encampment, Ashlynn Johnson earned Bronze and Silver Medals and KeeGan Johnson earned a Gold Medal. Micaiah Pantle and Noelle Peterson both earned Bronze Medals. From Saratoga, Sarah Burton earned a Silver Medal. Each recipient was honored for setting challenging goals in the areas of voluntary public service, personal development, physical fitness and expedition/exploration.

Goals are determined by personal interests and skills and individualized to each participant. Earning a bronze medal requires at least a seven-month commitment, while earning the gold medal involves two or more years and 400 hours of service.

The gold medallists also receive a $1,000 higher education scholarship and a trip to Washington, D.C. for the national ceremony to be held on June 17th at the U.S. Capitol.
