Board, superintendent consider district calendar unification

A district-wide calendar is being considered by the Carbon County School District No. 2 (CCSD#2) Board of Trustees, but it has some vetting to go through before the board sees the final recommendation.

The District Accountability Committee (DAC), a 24-member committee, is considering all of the options before presenting anything to the board.

CCSD#2 Superintendent Jim Copeland told the board at their regular board meeting Monday night in Medicine Bow the committee is talking to parents and staff about what they would like to see in a district-wide calendar.

Currently Encampment K-12 School is the only school to have a five-day school week. Saratoga schools have been on a four-day schedule for nearly a decade and the schools at the north end of the district, Hanna, Medicine Bow and Elk Mountain changed their schedule to four-and-one-half days two years ago. This year the north end went to a four-day school week.

The suggestion is not without controversy as parents are already contacting the district office with their concerns. Copeland did not go into detail, but told the board members they will be hearing from CCSD#2 parents as the DAC prepares to rank the calendars.

Once the calendars have been ranked, they will be presented to the board. Copeland told the board, if this is not the direction they want to go, to tell him now.

Copeland explained one of the purposes of a district-wide calendar was to pull the district together.

He said the research on four-day school week is “all over the place” but he has found it to be successful in school districts he has worked in prior to coming to CCSD#2.

The next school board meeting is at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Feb 18 at the Central Office in Saratoga.
