Eleven Panthers make top five at Wheatland

With 11 athletes placing in the top five, the Saratoga High School Track and Field team showed vast improvement at last weekend’s Wheatland Invite.

Katie Loose, Kelsie Samson, Haley Soles, Cameron Collamer and Andrew Oiler all made top five placements individually, while the boys’ teams for the 400 meter relay (Seth Harrison, Hunter Mason, Tate Stinson and Kyle Bartlett) and 1600 meter relay (Mason, Cameron Collamer, Alex Ziegler and Ben Falk) achieved third and second place respectively. The times of the two relay teams (46.31 for the 400 meter, 3:41.8 for the 1600 meter) also qualified for the state track and field championships.

Coach Rex Hohnholt said he was pleased to see such an improvement, and many team members come for Friday’s meet at Wheatland High School, their second of the season. The March 28 Natrona Invite boasted only one top-five placer from Saratoga, and one relay team from the school that qualified for state.

“It was good to have most of our kids there, and we were missing just a couple and had a couple we didn’t have last week,” Hohnholt said. “The girls performed well and are moving in the right direction, and on the boys side we had a lot of nice improvement at times. We’ve still got a lot of work to do to be one of the top teams in the state, but there’s potential there from seeing the kids compete. With those field events, like the jumping and throwing events, it’s going to be a dogfight against other teams out there.”

Hohnholt said he was grateful for good weather at their meets, and added that good practice is the key to succeeding at future meets and the state competition.

“We need more productive practice days, and I hope we can get all our practices in for next week,” he said. “There are some good teams that we’ll see later on, and it will be interesting to see who’s actually on those teams by the time we get to state. I think the main thing is we should be ready to go out there, and if the races don’t go quite as we’d like them to, we should still be able to say we performed awful hard and are in good shape.”

The team will compete at the Okie Blanchard Invite in Cheyenne, starting at 11 a.m. Friday.
