Muzzleloaders report Rendezvous largest in Wyoming for 2013

Talk of the upcoming Sierra Madre Muzzleloaders Mountainman Rendezvous Thursday evening got Encampment Town Council members excited for summer.

Josh Saier, President of the Sierra Madre Muzzleloaders Rifle Club, asked the council Thursday for use of the land near the Grand Encampment Museum (GEM), and a regular contribution for the Mountainman Rendezvous. The American Old West-style shooting and throwing competition would take place July 25-27 this year.

Council members approved use of the land, and to contribute $500 and four port-o-johns, which is what they had given for the Rendezvous in past years.

Saier thanked the council for its contribution, and talked about the success of 2013’s Rendezvous.

“We made quite a few of the shoots last year, and our Rendezvous here in Encampment was the biggest shoot in the state of Wyoming last year,” he said. “We also had the biggest amount of kid shooters, with 20 of them, and that’s a big deal to us. Thank goodness for the community and your support, because that’s what makes it happen.”

Joe Morrison, also with Sierra Madre Muzzleloaders, said there were 121 people registered for 2013’s Rendezvous, and that 86 or 87 total gun shooters were signed up. He said he received positive feedback on the large number of youngsters signed up to shoot.

Saier also notified the council of the Marion Baker Memorial Shoot this summer. Baker, who passed away two years ago, was a strong supporter of the Sierra Madre Muzzleloaders Rifle Club.

“We’d also like to ask for the use of the area on June 7th for the Marion Baker Memorial Shoot, and that’s a club invitational deal where we get together and do something for Marion,” Saier said. “It was called the Marion Baker Shoot before, but we made it a memorial shoot after she passed. She used to own the Brass Rail Bar north of Saratoga, and she was a big supporter of the club who helped get it started in the 80s. She came to shoots and gave the club a place to have a meeting place.”

The council approved use of the land near the GEM for the Marion Baker Memorial Shoot. Saier said the shoot would begin at 9 a.m. on June 7.

Later, the council approved to submit a rec board grant in the total of $11,616.40. Priorities listed in the grant’s budget included utilities for the Grand Encampment Opera House and parks department ($4,000), parks department employee wages ($3,000), the Music in the Park event ($1,000), materials for the Fence at Archery Range ($1,851.40), one picnic table for Grandview Park ($1,265) and the Sierra Madre Winter Carnival ($500).
