Our military shouldn't fight other countries' wars

Editor’s note: When the Saratoga Sun ran what we thought were the last of the student guest column’s on Dec. 4, 2013, we were notified that three of them had not been published. They had been lost somewhere in cyberspace. Encampment english teacher Leslie McLinsky emailed them to us again, so that we might run them in the earliest issue possible.

People join the military to fight for our country. We should not put our military at risk by sending them to fight someone else’s war. Many soldiers in the military have a strong point of view on fighting other countries’ battles. A lot of them join the military to fight for our country. Going to fight for countries that did nothing to us is defeating the purpose of joining the military in the first place.

As for those of us who actually have a family member in the military to worry about, my family personally thinks that if we send our troops overseas, it would be a waste of time. It’s not like the 9/11 attack where they hurt our people and a war was started. It is completely different when it involves a country that didn’t do anything to us. If we decide to intervene, it needs to be the United Nation’s decision as whole, not what our current president thinks he needs to do. Every country needs to work their own problems out and leave everyone else out of their issues.

My main reason for discussing this is because of Syria. That topic was such a big deal; all you’d hear about was Syria and their chemical weapons problem, which had absolutely nothing to do with the United States. I’m really glad President Obama realized getting involved with that issue would be a mistake. I was thrilled to hear we wouldn’t be going over there after all.

The United States patriots risk their lives for our country, not every other country in the world. As it states in the military’s mission statement, “It is the intent of Congress to provide an Army that is capable, in conjunction with the other armed forces, of preserving the peace and security, and providing for the defense, of the United States, the Territories, Commonwealths, and possessions, and any areas occupied by the United States; supporting the national policies; implementing the national objectives; and overcoming any nations responsible for aggressive acts that imperil the peace and security of the United States.” Everything our troops vow to do in the military has everything to do with our United States. Not any other country in the world.

In conclusion, I, along with many other true to heart Americans, stand firm by our decision to not send our troops to fight battles that don’t even include us. There’s a reason we have a military for our United States, and fighting other country’s battles is not an acceptable reason to be sending troops out to die for no probable cause.
