Broke leg

Paul Hopkins, on Cow Creek, had the misfortune to have his horse fall with him Friday, while handling some cattle, and broke his right leg about four inches below the knee, both bones. Dr. Price was called from here and made a flying trip in a car and gave Mr. Hopkins the needed attention.

Mr. Hopkin’s father, W. A. Hopkins came in on the train Sunday from Colorado, where he was notified of the accident. He will undoubtedly be laid up for some time, with the fracture of both bones at that part of his leg. The doctor reports him doing nicely.

River below normal past six years

For the sixth consecutive year the total flow of the North Platte River has been below normal, according to an announcement sent to The Sun this week by the Geological Survey, U.S. Department of the Interior.

The total discharge at Saratoga for the year 1938 was 934,000 acre-feet, which was 97 percent of the mean annual discharge for the 36 years of record, the report reveals. The highest year was 1909, with 1,800,000 acre-feet, and the lowest was 1934, with 238,600 acre-feet. The highest rate of discharge during 1938 was 8,820 second feet (cubic feet per second) and the lowest was 173 second-feet.

Rod and Gun Club obtains limited liquor license

Charter members of the newly organized Rod and Gun Club met Sunday at the club room in the Trail Inn to discuss membership applications and rules, according to club officers.

Following the meeting it was announced that the club was organized several months ago and the charter received from the National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association about 30 days ago. Officers of the organization are R.F. Wyers, president; Howard Corpening, secretary, and Frank Shaw, treasurer.

Friday night the group was granted a limited retail liquor license beginning Sunday. Plans are being made for activities at the club rooms Sundays.

Officers explained that membership in the organization is by invitation only, and that only members and out-of-town guests will be allowed to use the club room and shooting range which will be built in the future.

The Saratoga Rod and Gun Club should not be confused with the Saratoga Gun Club, organized here several years ago under the affiliation with the National Rifle Association. The firing range and club room are located east of Saratoga near the rodeo grounds.

Panthers to begin new wrestling program

Wrestling is returning to Saratoga High School after a four-year absence.

The Panthers will be coached by business teacher Mark Sanford, a four-year letterman who wrestled for Natrona County High School. He will be assisted by former Saratoga state champion Randy Arnold.

The last Panthers wrestling team was in 1983-84 when five of the 11 members went to state. In 1984-85, Saratoga and Encampment were combined, with wrestlers using the name Platte Valley Cats. For the following three years, Saratoga wrestlers joined Encampment’s team, wrestling as the Encampment Tigers.

Returning lettermen are Dwayne Meadows and Mike Christensen. Other team members are Lance Grubb, James Olguin, Bud Henderson, Chris Hileman, Neal Parker, Steve Alcorn, Monte Ostrem, Tim McVey, Tom Tysor, Aaron Hood, Shane Mowry, Ruben Cady, Shannon Macy, Robby James and Jason Lewis.

Saratoga begins the season with a home meet against Laramie JV on Jan. 14 at 9 a.m. in the gym.
