With four athletes who placed in the Top 10, Encampment High School track coach Kegan Willford looks back on the Wyoming High School State Track Tournament as a meet well-performed.
Willford said he was quite proud of his Top 10 placers, which included two-time 1A State Champion Alyssa Barkhurst. As a freshman in her first high school state track tournament, Barkhurst fought the odds and received first in two events at state.
“Alyssa Barkhurst was our first place (state champion) for this year, and she placed first in the 100 meter and 200 meter dashes,” he said. “Kyle Wessel placed ninth in the 110 meter hurdles, Waddie Love placed fourth in the shot put and Cassidy Little placed eighth in the 800 meter run and ninth in the triple jump. The entire team really enjoyed competing and watching all of the best track athletes in the state compete over three days, and it’s the only time of year this happens.”
Willford said also he is going to miss his 2013 group of spring track athletes, but eagerly looks forward to next year.
“The thing I am going to miss the most about this season is the camaraderie of our track team,” he said. “Being a small track team brings every member of the team that much closer to one another, so the kids are a pretty tight-knit group. I would like to get even more athletes qualified for state next year. It’s not an easy thing to do, but it is a great experience.”
