Encampment garners nine gold medals

The Encampment Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) brought home 25 medals Friday after competing against 36 schools and 710 entries.

FCCLA advisor Cheryl Munroe said 522 FCCLA members were registered at the state competition. She had 24 students compete.

Munroe said there are three divisions: junior grades 7-9; senior consumer grades 10-12; and occupational grades 9-12, which includes students who are taking occupational classes.

In the occupation division, Lucas Jarrett was awarded a $1,000 scholarship to Johnson and Wales University in Denver and a gold medal for his applied technology entry.

Matthew Jarrett, Harold Jackson and Brett Ralston earned a bronze medal and a $500 scholarship to Johnson and Wales University for their entrepreneurship entry. Munroe said the bronze was the highest award given entrepreneurship this year.

Kaylyn Wessel earned a gold in the senior division for illustrated talk.

Randa Sorensen won gold in the senior division of textile arts.

In the FCCLA Creed competition, Harold Jackson won gold, Waddie Love earned a silver and Kyle Wessel received honorable mention.

Jennifer Morgan grabbed the silver for her cake decoration in the senior division while Kaylyn Wessel earned a honorable mention.

In the junior division McKenzie Powell and Micaiah Pantle earned a silver medal for Focus on Children.

Aylssa Barkhurst earned a gold medal in Life Event Planning while Emily Morgan and Hailey Barkhurst won silver medals.

Ashlyn Johnson earned a gold medal in recycle and redesign.

Emily Morgan won gold, with McKenzie Powell getting a silver and Shelby Howe earned honorable mention in textile arts/original design.

Spencer Knotwell won a gold medal and John Cramer a silver medal for textile arts/accessory.

Jacob Dickinson won a gold medal in the extemporaneous category with Guy Erickson earning a gold in FCCLA Creed. Gale Jackson and Wyatt Cox earned honorable mention.

Wendy Barkhurst and Stacey Erickson attended the convention as judges and room attendants with Gayle Wessel assisting with chapter obligations.

Principal Mike Erickson assisted with the Feed the Children program and hauled boxes of food and personal care items to be distributed to local churches. Jarrett said it took more than two-and-half hours to unload the semitrailer for Feed the Children. Students from all the schools helped unload, Jarrett said.

The convention was held at the Holiday Inn in Cheyenne with the competitions at Cheyenne South, Cheyenne Central, Cheyenne East and the Holiday Inn.
