Baker's dozen head to state meet

Saratoga High School track coach Rex Hohnholt was happy with the fact that many of his athletes had personal bests Friday and Saturday at regionals in Sheridan.

Hohnholt said the personal best helps the athletes to get mentally prepared for state.

“It’s that cream of the crop that is going to state,” Hohnholt said. That cream includes of all his senior competitors.

With some of his athletes getting their personal best even though they didn’t qualify for state, he is hoping they are ending their season with a good taste in the mouth for track next year.

Hohnholt said the competition is tough this year and that it takes a lot to make it to state. “State is deep in every event this year.” He commended all the athletes for the work they put in through the season.

It was windy in Sheridan during the meet, which hindered Andrew Oiler from topping his 12’ 8” record set at home two weeks ago. “It was the worst conditions for pole vaulters,” Hohnholt said.

Five girls and eight boys will compete at state beginning on Thursday at 11 a.m.

Kelsie Samson and Katie Loose both qualified for state in the 1600-meter run, while Meredith Lincoln qualified in the 100-meter hurdles.

Samson, Loose, Veronica Lincoln and Alicia Zaragoza also qualified for state in the 4x800 relay taking a second place finish.

Riley Sandilands qualified in the 100-meter dash and Alex Ziegler qualified in the 200-meter and 400-meter dash.

Jeremy Detterer qualified in the 1600-meter run and Andrew Oiler qualified in the 110-meter hurdles.

The relay team just missed qualifying for state at regionals by seconds, but fortunately had already qualified earlier in the season.

The team of Aaron Kerbs, Jeremy Detterer, Benjamin Fairbanks and Andrew Oiler placed fourth in the 4x800 relay, getting the chance to prove themselves at state.

In the boys high jump, Bradley Bifano qualified for state and Benjamin Fairbanks qualified in the 800-meter run as well as the 1600-meter and 3200-meter run.

Oiler and Marshal Hill qualified in the pole vault.
